Time traveling woman using cell phone in 1928 Chaplin film?

George Clarke, an Irish filmmaker and avid Charlie Chaplin fan, believes he has spotted a woman in Chaplin’s The Circus (1928) walking across an otherwise normal scene using a cell phone.  Clarke says that he has studied this film and the scene in particular (a DVD extra) for over a year; neither he nor “over 100” of his aquaintances have been able to provide an explanation for the woman’s actions.  In the video you can clearly see our subject walking past Grauman’s Chinese Theatre with her hand to her ear and she’s talking.  Conspiracy theorists are having a field day with this viral hit, and I’m sitting here trying to wrap my head around it.  Mainstream news, per usual, is doing its best to find reasons against such an unruly theory as time travel.  Some think that the woman is simply humming to herself and itching the side of her face.  That’s a long itch!

Go on and hop after the break to watch the scene and decide for yourself.  And you can add this to our ongoing collection of time travelers.

Band loses gear, rocks out on NYC subway using iPhone instrument apps

Brooklyn-based band Atomic Tom supposedly had all their instruments stolen earlier this month.  So they decided to hop on the B-train and perform their single “Take Me Out” using nothing but iPhones and musical apps.  The video went viral and has garnered around 2.1 million hits on YouTube.  I say “supposedly had their instruments stolen” because this all went down about three months after their debut album The Moment hit iTunes.  Publicity stunt or not, these guys are super talented.

Girl begins to strip on ChatRoulette, but it’s not what you think…

The marketing team behind the upcoming horror flick The Last Exorcism is good, real good.  Using ChatRoulette, they are tricking desperate boys everywhere into thinking a beautiful girl is about to strip right before their innocent widening eyes.  Much to their surprise (their reactions are PRICELESS), the girl is not about to flash her boobs but instead scare the crap out of them!  Genius viral marketing campaign, indeed.  The Last Exorcism hits theatres next Friday.

“Leaked” PS4 viral videos are fake, still fantastic

In early June two viral advertisements hit the web that claimed to be brand new “leaked” spots for Sony’s next video game console, the PlayStation 4.  The first video dubbed “Leaked Launch Trailer” (see above) features a man inside a lab facility who is wearing what appears to be an advanced pair of 3D glasses that literally brings you into the game.  In the video we watch (along with Japanese testers) the man experience the PS4’s virtual reality capabilities for the first time.  At first the man is spooked by what he sees, but then a glimmer of hope (and success on Sony’s part) is revealed when the man gives a satisfying smirk at the conclusion of the test.  The second video (look after the break for it) is titled “Leaked Viral Video” and plays out like a true viral video, shaky cam and all.  This one follows two frantic Sony employees into a large facility; once there, they find a gamer who is frozen with excitement over the powers of the PS4 system.  The employees remove glasses from his face but cannot pry the game controller out of his hand.  The gamer squeals in joy.

After some investigation, the web realized they were douped when 24-year-old filmaker Han West spilled the beans.  West created these fake viral videos for a school project that required him to produce “one viral ad and one more ‘polished’ commercial.”   “Leaked Launch Trailer”, the polished spot above, took 12 hours to shoot and cost $500.  “Leaked Viral Video” took four hours to capture and cost a mere $20.  In the end, his timing was impeccible; these video “leaked” onto the web just days before E3, leading many to suspect Sony would announce the vision with the PS4 during their press conference.  Job well done, Mr. West.

Trailer: Winnebago Man

If you have not watched the original “Winnebago Man” video on YouTube, please watch it right now (warning: lots and lots of cursing are contained in the video).

It’s a simple story, really.  But it’s one that had to be made.  Jack Rebney is Winnebago Man.  All he wanted to do was film a promotional video for RVs, but his short patience and dirty mouth got in the way.  The outtakes from the video were compiled into one, and “Winnebago Man” became a hugely popular YouTube video.  As of right now the video has over 1.8 million views.  Filmmaker Ben Steinbauer found the video so facinating that he decided to search for Rebney and capture on video the legend that is Winnebago Man.  Here’s the synopsis:

Jack Rebney is the most famous man you’ve never heard of — a Winnebago salesman whose hilarious, foul-mouthed outbursts circulated on VHS tapes in the 90s before turning into a full-blown Internet phenomenon in 2005. Filmmaker Ben Steinbauer goes in search of Rebney — and finds him living alone on a mountain top, unaware of his fame. WINNEBAGO MAN is a laugh-out-loud look at viral culture and an unexpectedly poignant tale of one man’s response to unintended celebrity.

The documentary received rave reviews at last year’s SXSW.  Kino International will release the film nationwide on July 9.  And if you happen to live in Chicago, the movie will be previewed at The Gene Siskel Film Center on June 16 with Steinbauer on hand to answer questions.

DJ transforms Nike running shoes into musical instruments

DJ Daito Manabe was hired by Nike to create this viral video to promote Nike’s new Free Run+ running shoes.  Daito and crew effectively turned the shoes into controllers and used them to create slick beats and alter sounds by tapping, bending, and twisting them in all sorts of ways.  How’d they do it?  In an interview Daito said “he used flex sensors and accelerometers to make the shoes interactive.  He then processed the control signal and converted it to sound using the modular visual programming environment Max/MSP and Ableton’s Max for Live.”  The result is what you see in the video above.  Freakin’ awesome.

Droid does bra size, underwear detection, & more

A few weeks back Motorola started a viral video campaign called  “SECRET MOTOROLA DROID UNLOCK CODES.”  In the videos a group of guys enter a series a numbers into a Motorola Droid to enable hidden features.  Some of the new videos have picked up in popularity and are actually quite entertaining.  In the video above, one of these special unlock codes turns the Droid into a bra size and underwear detector.  Look after the break for two more videos featuring the Droid as a taser and animal translator.  Man, what can’t Droid do?

Crazy engineers cannonball themselves to recreate the Intel chime

This dangerous stunt by “Intel engineers” to recreate the famous Intel chime from the commercials sounds (and looks) crazy, right?  Well, it turns out it is too crazy to be true.  This is an viral video promoting Intel; the “engineers” are actors and the cannonball stunt is fake.  Hell, at least it’s entertaining.
