Trailer: ‘Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter’

Author Seth Grahame-Smith (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) penned Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter in 2010 and this summer the history/supernatural mashup is coming to theatres in 3D. Here’s a quick synopsis, per Time Entertainment:

Honest Abe is born into an era of bloodsuckers, during a time of mass immigration, as the vampires are being flushed out of Europe. His grandfather was killed by a vampire, his mother was the victim to the poisons of vampire blood. When he’s elected president, he leads the charge into the Civil War as a means of averting a systematic takeover of America by power-hungry vampire hordes.

Though it sounds wacky, the novel went on to be hugely popular making the New York Times bestseller list and the trailer (embedded above) will definitely get your blood pumping. I mean, it’s Abe with an axe fending off vampires in Civil Wars times… what else could you ask for, really? Director Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) and producer Tim Burton collaborated to adapt Grahame-Smith’s vision for the big screen. Benjamin Walker (Flags of Our Fathers) plays the 16th President of the United States. We’ll see if the hype is worth it come June 22.

Trailer 2: ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’

Here is a grander look at Marc Webb’s Spidey reboot The Amazing Spider-Man. In it we see Andrew Garfield decked out in the suit and in action; we are introduced to Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacey; and we get more than a glimpse of Rhys Ifans as the film’s big baddie The Lizard. Will Webb’s reboot tell a better Spider-Man origin story than Sam Raimi did with Tobey Maguire in the lead role? Your answer comes July 12 when The Amazing Spider-Man releases in 3D.

Super Bowl XLVI: The Commercials! [Update: record ratings]

It’s a fact: there is a giant segment of people out there who watch the Super Bowl every year for one reason and one reason only: for the commercials. Companies like Anheuser Busch and E*Trade think up of ways to capture the wild imaginations of the public and deep way down their pockets to score spots between all the football action. This year a 30-second spot costs companies on average $3.5 million! In the end it’s all about attracting eyeballs and that’s what the Super Bowl spectacle does best. Last year a record-breaking 111 million viewers tuned into the game. And with a matchup like the Patriots versus the Giants this year’s viewership is bound to jump even higher.

With the world watching and so much money spent, this year’s commercials are expected to go above and beyond what we’ve ever seen before. Prior to the big game, companies have released teasers and even full-length ads that will be aired on Sunday. The two most popular ones so far have been Honda’s Ferris Bueller-inspired spot and Volkswagen’s Star Wars-themed “The Bark Side” starring a collection of dogs barking the Imperial March. Update: The game is over (the Giants beat the Patriots, YEAH!) and the most buzzed about commercials are posted after the break, along with the theatrical trailers that aired (Avengers, anyone?).

Trailer 2: ‘Project X’

The low-budget R-rated comedy from director Nima Nourizadeh and producer Todd Phillips (The Hangover) has a new trailer and it blows the first one out of the water. Project X uses shaky cam “found footage” to tell the story of a group of high school seniors throwing one helluva party that quickly spirals out of control. While the first trailer plays with your mind and dares you to think that X might be a comedy wrapped inside a dark adventure, this new one lays everything out in the open, properly introduces our main group of characters, and defines itself as a full-on, no holds barred crazy laugh fest involving stupid young teens that the current generation will definitely relate to. Get ready to party hard when Project X releases in theatres March 2.

Trailer: ‘Silent House’ horror flick plays out in “real-time”

You can add Silent House to your list of must-see horror flicks in 2012 (it should sit next to The Woman in Black). The American remake of the 2010 Uruguayan Spanish-language original tracks Sarah, a woman trapped inside her family’s secluded lake house. What makes this movie special is the way it plays out: in real time, much like how events unfolded in the TV series 24. Directors Chris Kentis and Laura Lau claim that Silent House was shot entirely in one take, which is highly suspicious to say the least. But still the notion that maybe it was will certainly draw audiences to theatres, including myself. It stars the youngest Olsen sister Elizabeth who recently wowed critics in her debut film Martha Marcy May Marlene, which also happens to be a psychological thriller. Just who/what is terrorizing Sarah in this trailer? After four extensive behind-the-scenes looks at Peter Jackson’s upcoming sequel two-fer The Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings mastermind has finally released a full-length trailer. Return to The Shire in this beautifully edited clip embedded above. Part 1, An Unexpected Journey, hits theatres next December the 14th.

Trailer round-up: ‘Rock of Ages’, ‘The Dictator’, ‘Jack the Giant Killer’, ‘ParaNorman’

This past week was packed to the brim with new movie trailers. Following The Three Stooges and Men in Black III is Rock of Ages, The Dictator, Jack the Giant Killer, and another look at the stop motion animation ParaNorman.

We start with Rock of Ages, a film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical. This movie has two things going for it: a fantastic collection of classic rock songs and a killer cast. It features music from Def Leppard, Foreigner, Journey, Poison, and Twisted Sister, and the talented cast is comprised of Julianne Hough, Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Malin Ackerman, Mary J. Blige, Alec Baldwin, and Tom Cruise as the rocker women pine over, Stacee Jaxx. Directed by Adam Shankman (Hairspray), Rock of Ages brings “the music of a generation” to theatres on June 1, 2012.

Trailer: ‘Men in Black 3’

A decade after our last encounter with The Men in Black, they’re back. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones return in the third installment in the Men in Black franchise as Agent J and Agent K, respectively. Also returning is director Barry Sonnenfeld who helmed the original way back in 1997 and the sequel in 2002. The first trailer reveals an interesting plotline involving Agent J traveling back in time to save K. In the ’60s, young K is played by none other than Josh Brolin. Here’s the official synopsis:

In Men in Black 3, Agents J (Will Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) are back… in time. J has seen some inexplicable things in his 15 years with the Men in Black, but nothing, not even aliens, perplexes him as much as his wry, reticent partner. But when K’s life and the fate of the planet are put at stake, Agent J will have to travel back in time to put things right. J discovers that there are secrets to the universe that K never told him — secrets that will reveal themselves as he teams up with the young Agent K (Josh Brolin) to save his partner, the agency, and the future of humankind.

With updated CGI, a fun time-travel story, and a Will Smith who hasn’t seem to age at all over the last ten years, Men in Black III looks like it’s going to be a winner for Sony Pictures when it hits theatres May 25, 2012.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. The trailer shows no sign of a catchy Will Smith tune to hype you up for the film’s release. My question is… will it live up to the 1997 diddy “Men in Black” or (dare I say) 2004’s mega-hit “Black Suits Comin’ (Nod Ya Head)”? And you know he’s gonna star in an equally thug music video, too!

2011 Video Game Awards winners and exclusive trailers

This past weekend Spike TV played host to the ninth annual Video Game Awards. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim took home the Vector Monkey trophy for Game of the Year, besting Portal 2, Batman Arkham City, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Throughout the night, host Zachary Levi (Chuck) interacted with neat in-show augmented reality animations from the aforementioned nominees. Skyrim also won Best RPG and helped Bethesda get crowned Studio of the Year. Portal 2 was recognized multiple times throughout the night; it won Best PC Game, Best Multiplayer Game, Best Performance by Male and Female, and Best DLC. Arkham City also won multiple awards for Character of the Year (The Joker), Best Xbox 360 Game, Best Action Adventure Game, and Best Adapted Video Game. This year the Gamer God Award went to Blizzard Entertainment, and Shigeru Miyamoto was on hand to accept the first ever Video Game Hall of Fame Award for The Legend of Zelda. After the break you’ll find a list of all the night’s winners and losers.

Though the awards play a big part of the VGAs every year, it’s the world premiere footage from upcoming games that really gets gamers amped. Among the most celebrated were Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us, Command and Conquer: Generals 2 from Bioware, Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, Fortnite from Epic Games (introduced by Cliffy B. himself), Irrational Games’ Bioshock Infinite, and Blizzard’s introductory cinematic for Diablo III. And then were was the VGAs epic finale. Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima stepped on stage to unveil the latest pulse-pounding trailer for Metal Gear Rising. Trailer: ‘The Three Stooges’

Here’s our first look at the The Three Stooges from the Farrelly Brothers. Sean Hayes, Chris Diamantopoulos, and Will Sasso are Larry, Moe, and Curly, respectively, and they star in this zany, slightly nostalgic trailer that places the trio in modern day. Originally enthused about this remake, now I’m not so sure how I feel. The slapstick comedy and classic sound effects are fun, but did they really have to resort to including the cast of The Jersey Shore? The Stooges return April 4, 2012. Here’s the latest synopsis:

Left on a nun’s doorstep, Larry, Curly and Moe grow up finger-poking, nyuk-nyuking and woo-woo-wooing their way to uncharted levels of knuckleheaded misadventure. Out to save their childhood home, only The Three Stooges could become embroiled in an oddball murder plot…while also stumbling into starring in a phenomenally successful TV reality show.

Trailer: ‘The Cabin in the Woods’

At long last, Joss Whedon’s The Cabin in the Woods is going to see the light of day. The director of The Avengers teamed up with Cloverfield helmer Drew Goddard to produce a horror flick originally slated to release in 2009. Due to MGM’s filing for bankruptcy, the film was shelved indefinitely. Thankfully Lionsgate came to the rescue and agreed to distribute it.

The Cabin in the Woods involves a group of good-looking teens who decide to spend a weekend at a vacant cabin to let loose and party. And then bad things happen. It’s a situation we’ve heard time and time again, but as the tagline hints, “You think you know the story.” Yeah, I went ahead and added the emphasis. Whedon, who produced and co-wrote with director Goddard, says it’s “a straight-up, balls-out, really terrifying horror movie…it is not just a slasher in the woods. It’s a little more complicated than that…” And if you screen the trailer above, you’ll see what he means by that. Sure, these kids are getting tortured just like in the classics (and the awful remakes I must admit), but the story is twisted and elevated a few notches higher when it starts to involve creepy voyeurs and a honeycomb-like forcefield that’s keeping the gang from escaping the woods. Will it rise above the recent slew of crappy horror flicks? With Whedon and Goddard behind the words and direction, I have no doubt The Cabin in the Woods will be a suspenseful thrill ride worth the price of admission. I’ve only watched this trailer like ten times and I’m ready to wait in line!

The Cabin in the Woods, which can now be considered a horror/sci-fi mashup, makes its way to theatres April 13, 2012. It stars Dollhouse alum Fran Kranz and Amy Acker, along with Tom Lenk (Buffy, Angel),  Jesse Williams, Kristen Connolly, Anna Hutchison, Brian White, and a pre-Thor Chris Hemsworth. Want to know what else is intriguing about all this? Big-name stars Richard Jenkins (Let Me In) and Bradley Whitford (The West Wing) are no where to be found in this trailer.
