‘Once Upon A Time’ looks back as 100th episode looms ahead

Consider yourself a fan of ABC’s fairy tale drama Once Upon A Time? Then look no further than here–it’s a nearly seven minute retrospective video that takes you down memory lane. The celebratory clip anticipates the series’ upcoming 100th episode, aka the season 5 midseason premiere, with a look back at the numerous heroes, villains, new worlds, adventures, and stories of love and hope we’ve experienced over the past five years. Fans have grown close to the classic fairy tale characters who make up Storybrooke, Maine, and that’s what makes this video all the more special. Audiences have witnessed characters like Emma Swan (who initially and for a long time didn’t believe) and The Evil Queen (whose name used to fit her well) blossom into heroic figures. And now, as we head into episode 100 that’s titled “Souls of the Departed,” Emma must journey into the Underworld where she’ll face off against Hades (Greg Germann) in order to save Hook from a hellish fate. Once is coming off its strong “Dark Swan” story arc, and with the promise of seeing old faces resurface (including Cora and Pan), fans can rest assured that the series will continue riding his creative streak heading into the latter half of the season.

Google, Twitter and Facebook assemble 2015’s trending topics

Ring in the New Year by taking a step back and reviewing what has come to pass over the past year. It’s about appreciating the good times and mourning loss. It’s about evaluating missteps, learning from mistakes, and broadening the brighter road ahead. Search giant Google and social networks Twitter and Facebook are here to provide retrospective, analytical, and all-encompassing telescopes looking back at the year 2015; let the good, the bad, and everything in-between comes into focus.

Posted above is Google’s Year in Search video and it brings to life the queries we searched and the questions and answers they brought forth. The Paris attacks, Star Wars, water on Mars, Cecil the Lion; all of the major crises and celebrations are accounted for in this clip and beyond. Google’s A Year in Search portal is an interactive way to explore what went down in 2015 around the world. There’s even a Top Charts section that breaks down the top searches across a wide range of categories. The top 10 U.S. searches in 2015? Lamar Odom, Jurassic World, American Sniper, Caitlyn Jenner, Ronda Rousey, Paris, Agar.io, Chris Kyle, Fallout 4, and Straight Outta Compton. In chaotic times, we sure do enjoy our entertainment, don’t we?

Google, Twitter and Facebook mark the highlights of 2014

As we close out the year, let’s journey back in time and explore the high points and the lows that made up the last 365 days. Google, Twitter, and Facebook gather our searches and publicly shared posts to make it super simple to do just that with dedicated portals, trending lists, and flashy videos. Let’s start with Google, as is tradition.

For 2014, Google is foregoing its “Zeitgeist” terminology for something simpler. The search giant is calling its retrospective portal “A Year in Search.” That’s got a nice ring to it. First, there’s the hopeful and inspirational video embedded above that summarizes the major events and discoveries that unfolded all around the world this year. And then there’s the Top Charts that show what we all searched for most across a myriad of categories including People, Cars, Beer, and Memes. Of course, it’s the top trending Searches of 2014 you’re likely most interested in knowing right off the bat and they are: Robin Williams, World Cup, Ebola, Maylaysia Airlines, Flappy Bird, ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, ISIS, Ferguson, Frozen, and Ukraine.

This year in movies, as told by 300 of them in seven minutes

Genevieve Ip returns with her annual look back at the year in movies. This time around she’s crammed 300 films into a seven-minute retrospective. The clip is separated into five parts based on various themes that connect the various films used: words, origins, evil, death & love, and time. Hop over to Ip’s Tumblr to read her take on said themes.

“One of my biggest goals in cutting this video was to show that movies are more alike than they are dissimilar, that they can all come together and tell a grander narrative about humanity and life,” she told the LA Times. “I’ll create a backbone of themes and try to find dialogue and music to support them. Sometimes though, I’m struck by a particular line and it takes on a life of its own and creates its own thematic section.”

According to a recent tweet, this is Ip’s final “Filmography” mashup. “I’m ready to come up with a new format for my passion projects,” she admits. So sit back, relax, and enjoy “Filmography 2013” and relive her past creations here.

Gen Ip, aka @genrocks on Twitter, is back to help us celebrate our favorite cinematic experiences in 2012. This time her annual look back features “great movies that inspired us and the bad ones that made us feel better about our lives.” Her first video in 2010 mashed together 270 films, last year’s dealt with 230 of them, and her latest pieces together a whopping 310 clips. Kick off the final season of ‘The Office’ with this (emotional) retrospective

Tonight (9/20) NBC kicks off the final season of The Office at 9PM. After what will be nine seasons of ups and downs in terms of sheer laughs and creative direction, Dunder Mifflin will close its doors for good this May. Before you sit down and watch tonight’s season premiere, watch this admittedly emotional retrospective that highlights some of the best, most memorable moments from the wacky, longrunning mockumentary. We miss you Michael Scott.

Tonight’s NBC lineup also includes the Up All Night (8:30PM) and Parks and Rec (9:30PM) season premieres, and they are preceded by an SNL Weekend Update Thursday special (8PM).

She’s done it again. Gen Ip, a communications student from Vancouver BC, has mashed together 230 movies that made in 2011. The annual retrospective “celebrates this year’s movies and their amazing capacity to transport us through the boundaries of space, time, and identity.” Head over to Gen’s Tumblr page to view the entire list of films used in the video; they’re listed in the order of their appearance.

College student mashes together 270 films released this year

Gen Ip, a communications student from Vancouver BC, loves movies.  So much so that she went ahead and mashed together 270 of them!  “I set out to make something that not only showcased this year’s films but also spoke to overall themes that we see in movies time and time again,” she explained to /Film.  The mashup, which she calls “Filmography 2010”, took over two months to complete and features movies either produced or distributed in 2010 as well as a fantastic song collection.  “Music was one of the most fundamental things for me”, she said.  “Song selection took a while because I wanted to experiment with different moods within the same video.”  Enjoy Ip’s 6+ movie mashup and bask in 2010’s cinematic offerings.
