3D re-release trailers: ‘Titanic’ & ‘Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace’ [Update: ‘Beauty and the Beast’]
Two classic movies are being re-released in 3D. First up is James Cameron’s 1997 emotional roller coaster Titanic. The director who imagined Avatar is re-releasing the tragic love story in 3D on April 6, 2012. This date falls right around the 100 year anniversary of the sailing of the ship. Titanic is considered one of the greatest movies of all time, but do you feel comfortable watching all those people lose their lives in eye-popping 3D? Tough call.
Next up is the re-release of The Phantom Menace, the first prequel movie from George Lucas’ famed Star Wars franchise. Lucas’ Industrial Light & Magic special FX company is converting all six Star Wars films to play in 3D. Episode 1 comes back to theatres on February 10, 2012, and the remaining five films will follow suit over the course of consecutive years. Watch the new trailer after the break.
Update: Disney has released a trailer promoting their next foray into 3D. ‘Star Wars: Episode I’ in 3D coming to theatres February 10, 2012
This week Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox announced when the Star Wars re-release in 3D is going to begin. Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace will be the first in the franchise to receive the 3D conversion treatment, landing in theatres February 10, 2012. The remaining five films will follow suit over the course of consecutive years. Reads the press release:
Set against the thrilling and exotic backdrop of a “galaxy far, far away,” Star Wars is perfectly suited to the immersive 3D theatrical experience, and Episode I delivers some of the Saga’s most stunning and spectacular sequences – from the Naboo invasion to the Tatooine Podraces to the climactic lightsaber battle between Darth Maul and the Jedi. Supervised by Industrial Light & Magic, the meticulous conversion is being done with utmost respect for the source material, and with a keen eye for both technological considerations and artistic intentions.
Do we really have to experience Jar Jar Binks in three dimensions? I might skip out on this one and wait for the original trilogy to come back; I advise you to do the same. And for all you couch potatoes out there, don’t forget that the franchise is coming to Blu-ray in September.

Avatar “Extended Collector’s Edition” out on Blu-ray & DVD November 16, bonus features and all
On November 16 fans of the highest grossing movie ever will be treated to special editions of Avatar on Blu-ray and DVD. You might be scratching your head thinking don’t I already own Avatar on Blu-ray (or DVD) already? Let’s remove that confusion. Avatar did release on both formats back in April; these versions, however, only included the original theatrical release. No bonus footage, no nothing. This second release, on the other hand, packs tons of bonus content and more. The three-disc Avatar Extended Collector’s Edition Blu-ray and Theatrical Special Edition Re-Release DVD (yeah, those are their official titles) will include the original theatrical version, the special edition re-release, and the collector’s extended cut that includes sixteen more minutes and an exclusive alternate opening Earth scene. They will also include 45 minutes of new never-before-seen deleted scenes. Says director James Cameron: “I told our team — let’s do the ultimate box set of Avatar, with everything in it the fans could possibly want. There’s an extended length cut that’s sixteen minutes longer, plus documentaries, behind the scenes featurettes, artwork and over 45 minutes of deleted scenes. Everything worth putting into a special edition is in this set.” Peek after the break for the official PR and to browse the bonus content in more detail. And as for the 3D Blu-ray version? That’s expected to release next year.

Avatar is coming back to IMAX 3D for a limited two week run with new footage
Here’s what you need to know. James Cameron’s epic Avatar is coming to back to theatres for a limited two week run from August 27 to September 10. It will only be shown in IMAX 3D theatres and will include “eight minutes of additional, never before seen footage.” So, if you haven’t seen the highest grossing movie of all time yet this is your chance to catch it the way it was meant to be seen–in IMAX 3D. And if you have seen the movie and enjoyed it the first time around, you might be interested in kicking back a second time to catch the new bits of footage. The movie looks fantastic in IMAX 3D because it was shot for that particular medium. If you purchased the movie on DVD or Blu-ray and haven’t see it yet, hold off on that until you’ve seen it in 3D. Trust me, it’s worth it.

Cameron’s Titantic goes 3D for 100th anniversary
Hot off the heels of creating the most financially successful movie of all time, visionary director James Cameron plans to splay his 3D tech on top of the (now) second highest grossing movie, his Titantic. Says Cameron: “We’re targeting spring of 2012 for the release, which is the 100 year anniversary of the sailing of the ship.” Can you imagine re-watching the sinking of the ship and all those dead bodies floating in the bloody sea in 3D? I know I can’t.
