Somehow, someway Lady Gaga manages to top herself when it comes to making music videos. As you would expect, this seven minute tale wraps together the lead single off her second album and a story about rebirth including the opening “Manifesto of Mother Monster” backed by Bernard Herrmann’s Vertigo theme. It gets weird when Gaga starts giving birth to slimy versions of herself, but things start to stabilize when the catchy track begins to play about two-and-a-half minutes in. Grab some popcorn, turn up the volume, and enjoy Mother Monster’s latest and greatest. And FYI–she’s planning to release a second video featuring an acoustic version of the song.

Music video: Dr. Dre – “I Need a Doctor” (Featuring Eminem & Skylar Grey)
Dre’s latest music video plays out more like short film, really. The seven-and-a-half-minute video for “I Need a Doctor,” directed by filmmaker Allen Hughes, takes us on a journey through Dre’s career using inserted pictures and video from his past. In the present Dre remains alive on life support as Eminem thanks him for his support over the years. Em raps, “You picked me up, breathed new life in me, I owe my life to you.” A ghostly Skylar Grey sings the hook. Notice all the HP product placement? How could you not. The recently announced Pre 3 and TouchPad make Touch-to-Share magic at the 4:20 mark (how ironic for the man who produced The Chronic).
Music video: Kanye West – “All of the Lights” (Featuring Rihanna & Kid Cudi)
The music video for Kanye West’s All of the Lights has arrived. ‘Ye tapped long-time collaborator Hype Williams to direct, and he also managed to bring featured artists Rihanna (her supple breasts) and Kid Cudi into the mix. The video plays out in a unique manner. It begins in black-and-white, following a little girl walking around a city while the interlude plays behind her. The interlude fades out about one minute in, bright colors frantically flash over the still girl, and the vocals come begin. Before West, Rihanna, and Cudder show up, RiRi belts out the chorus as the corresponding lyrics fill up the screen in various colors, shapes, sizes, and style. After Cudi concludes his bit, the horns come back and we are left without an appearance from Fergie. The chorus sounds again along with the stylized words, and then the video name drops all of the song’s contributors including John Legend, Charlie Wilson, Tony Williams, Alicia Keys, and La Roux. The final fifteen seconds involves a barrage of–what else–flashing lights. If you haven’t picked up My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy yet, what is wrong with you?
Music video: Britney Spears – “Hold It Against Me”
It’s true, I haven’t been the biggest fan of Britney Spears since her 2007 meltdown. But I’ve never seen such anticipation for music video like this before. Spears shot the video, directed by Jonas Åkerlund and choreographed by Brian Friedman, in late January and since then “HIAM” and anything relating to it has been trending on Twitter ever since. People couldn’t stop talking about Britney’s followup to her comeback effort (2008’s Circus). The Max Martin/Dr. Luke dance track is lively and technically sound; Spears’ autotuned voice adds some flavor to it. The music video is odd, to say the least. Though the choreography is enjoyable, Åkerlund decided on too many frantic cuts so it was hard to watch Britney do her thing. I did enjoy the battle of the Britneys sequence, and I’m sure you will too. Check it out above, and download the track right here. Her seventh studio album Femme Fatale releases March 25.
Music video: Rihanna – “S&M”
Rihanna’s back with another music video coming off her latest album Loud. Whips, chains, bananas, and Perez Hilton all make extended appearences in the colorfully vibrant video for “S&M.” And as usual, Rihanna brings sexy back. Videos for “Only Girl (In the World)” and “What’s My Name” are also available for your viewing pleasure.
Discover new music: The Glitch Mob
So I was flipping through the channels the other day and was mesmerized by a commercial for a GoPro HD camera. To be more specific, I was not so much attracted to the product being marketed but rather the song playing in the background. After some swift investigation I discovered the song was called “Animus Vox” performed by The Glitch Mob. I found a link to the full song on YouTube (it’s embedded above) and instantly I became a fan of the three-piece electronic group known as The Glitch Mob.
The LA-based group was formed back in 2006 and today consists of Ed Ma (AKA edIT), Justin Boreta (AKA Boreta), and Josh Mayer (AKA Ooah). They’ve been touring around the country carrying along equipment that makes tracks like “Animus Vox” sound so very awesome–laptops (with Ableton Live loaded), MIDI controllers, electronic drums and keyboards. In an interview with Electronic Musician, the band shared their synth-making process. Ma: “A day of songwriting, like from scratch, would generally start with us loading up a basic kick and snare at a tempo that we wanted, and then laying down a very basic kick and snare as the backbone of what the rhythm would be like. And then we’d just play everything in. Synth parts, bass parts.” … “Essentially, all the songs [on new album Drink the Sea] were written to a point where they were almost like demo tapes. The first phase of our album was like a 10-track album that all sounded like it was made in [Apple] GarageBand. And then when we were done with those 10 songs, we’d go back and redesign the songs. And once the redesigning was done, we went back and we mixed the entire album. So kind of in this multistep stage.” Transitioning their sound from live performances to recorded music was an important step in the process. “Almost every melody that you hear on the album has been sampled note for note [for the live show]. That was the only way that we could get the actual sounds of the record to translate live,” shares Ma. “We really tried to reproduce the record, note for note and percussion sound for percussion sound, as close as humanly possible.” The result? Electronic Musician describes Drink the Sea as “mainly [an] instrumental electronic effort that features heavily layered synths, mixed with real bass and guitar, and bolstered by bombastic, cinematic-sounding drums and simple, yet effective melodies.”
There are a ton of electronic groups out there, but The Glitch Mob definitely stands out on its own and is worth a listen; it’s hard not to get hooked to their masterful and sophisticated synths and beats.
Since 2006 they’ve released a number of mixtapes and remixes. Last summer they dropped their first full-length album; Drink the Sea contains 10 tracks, including “Animus Vox.” You can preview the entire album, as well as listen to a bunch of their other releases and download free content, at their official website. While you’re there, be sure to check out their Video section which includes music video remixes and a smattering of live performances. After the break, I’ve posted two of my favorites: an experimental live performance called “Beyond Monday” that features the band using their equipment and the Tron: Legacy trailer infused with “Animus Vox.”
The music video that takes you into the making of a music video
META ALERT! This visually splendid music video directed by Mathieu Wothke is unlike any other you’ve seen because it puts you into the director’s head and takes you on a journey through the process of making a music video. In other words, the music video gets put together in the music video. Have you given you a headache yet? Just watch the video and you’ll see what I mean.
Oh, right. The song is “Very Busy People” by The Limousines but in honesty you’re watching for the behind-the-scenes magic, not the music itself. Unless of course this is your cup of tea…

DJ Earworm’s “United State of Pop 2010” mashup has arrived
DJ Earworm never fails to impress with his annual “United State of Pop” track. Again this year he has masterfully figured out how to mash together the top 25 hits according to Billboard Magazine. Ke$ha, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Taio Cruz dominate the five-and-a-half minute track, with some Train, B.o.B., Enrique Iglesias, Eminem, and Bruno Mars sprinkled in for good measure. You can watch the mashup come to life in the music video above, and then download the explosively catchy track right here. Look after the break to find a list of all the songs used in the mashup and some cover art.
How does 2010’s “Don’t Stop the Pop” match up to 2009’s “Blame It on the Pop”? Sound off in the comments below.

Preview Kanye West’s “Monster” music video
Looks like Kanye West is readying his next music video. The followup to the “Power” painting will be a haunting tribute to the “Monster” track on West’s incredible My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. This 40 second preview of the video was originally obtained by Hip Hop Connection but was recently taken down from the site. I managed to find another copy hanging out in YouTube, so make sure you check it out before it gets squashed again. In it you’ll see West interacting with dead girls, Jay-Z rapping amidst dead girls hanging from the ceiling like chandeliers, and Nicki Minaj spitting her sick verse erotically crawling on the floor. Rick Ross also plays a part in the video, and you can click here to see a brief behind-the-scenes glimpse into his on-screen duties. With all of this leaking at once, I’d like to think the final, official version is ready for a release soon.
Music video: Dr. Dre – “Kush” (Featuring Snoop Dogg & Akon)
With the release of a brand new music video, Dr. Dre’s Detox release is becoming that much more of an imminent reality. The music video for the lead single “Kush” features Dre, Snoop, and Akon partying it up but all the guests are frozen in time. These neat special FX mixed with the thumping bass of this catchy track make for an enjoyable video.
