Movie trailer round-up: ’22 Jump Street’, ‘Transcendence’, ‘Welcome to Yesterday’ & ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’

Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill return in 22 Jump Street. Phil Lord and Chris Miller also return to direct the sequel to the 2001 flick based on the 1987-1991 TV series that starred Johnny Depp. Tatum and Hill are back as the bumbling cops but this time they’re going undercover at a college. If this trailer is any indication the sequel aims to bring the big laughs again when 22 Jump Street hits theatres June 13, 2014.

Movie trailer round-up: ‘Edge of Tomorrow’, ‘Jupiter Ascending’, ‘Godzilla’, ‘Interstellar’ & ‘Bad Words’

Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt star in the sci-fi time travel pic Edge of Tomorrow directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity).

The epic action of Edge of Tomorrow unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Major William Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again… and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

Yeah, this one is a can’t miss. Edge of Tomorrow, formally known as All You Need Is Kill–the name of the Japanese novel it is based on–hits theatres June 6, 2014.

Marvel drops new ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ poster + trailer

Chris Evans is back as Steve Rogers aka Captain America in the sequel The Winter Soldier. Above Cap looks ready to jump off a S.H.I.E.L.D. “bus” and into action. In my opinion the first film was the weakest in Marvel’s Phase One batch; thankfully the movie’s premiere trailer kicks things into high gear with some fantastic, big budget action sequences featuring lots of Cap, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, and Samuel L. Jackson’s omnipresent Nick Fury. Joining the cast are Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Anthony Mackie as Falcon, Emily VanCamp as Agent 13, and Robert Redford as Agent Alexander Pierce, a senior leader within the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization. The latest synopsis follows.

After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” finds Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy—the Winter Soldier.

First look at ‘Paranormal Activity’ spinoff ‘The Marked Ones’

Paramount is not releasing Paranormal Activity 5 this Halloween season; it’s being held until October 2014. Taking its place, however, is a PA spinoff called Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. The found-footage spinoff, written and directed by franchise vet Christopher Landon, is a departure from the movies that come before it as it takes place in Oxnard, California and features a mostly Latino cast. This was done on purpose; the studio is targeting PA‘s Latino audience here. Fans of the franchise, though, will pickup clues sprinkled throughout the official trailer that tie this movie directly to the other ones: the Katie & Kristi tapes are mentioned, Kristi’s step-daughter Ali Rey (played by Molly Ephraim, last seen in PA 2) aids the new protagonist, and that demon-summoning triangle symbol is rampant throughout. The trailer, embedded above, says “this is only the beginning;” could this mean fans should expect more PA spinoffs set in the same demonic, found footage universe in the future?

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones hits theatres January 2.

New ‘Hobbit’ trailer intros Benedict Cumberbatch’s dragon Smaug

Here we have the “official main trailer” for the next movie in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy, The Desolation of Smaug. It builds upon the teaser that was released in June quite well, with more action, more of Evangeline Lilly’s elf warrior Tauriel, and most importantly our anticipated introduction to the voice behind the mighty dragon Smaug played by the one and only Benedict Cumberbatch.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens December 13.

Movie trailer roundup: Disney’s ‘Frozen’ & Aaron Paul in ‘Need For Speed’

It looks like Walt Disney Animation Studios has another winner on its hands. The followup to Wreck-It Ralph is Frozen and ironically enough it’s going to be warm-hearted tale of adventure and lots of laughter. Like the teaser before it, this full-length trailer is brimming with laugh-out-loud jokes and much charm.

Here’s a refresher: Frozen is described as “a stunning big-screen comedy adventure. Fearless optimist Anna (voice of Kristen Bell) sets off on an epic journey—teaming up with rugged mountain man Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) and his loyal reindeer Sven—to find her sister Elsa (Idina Menzel), whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter. Encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious snowman named Olaf, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom.”

Frozen hits theatres in 3D this November 27.

Having survived the madness of his parents’ (Richard Jenkins and Catherine O’Hara) divorce, Carter now has a successful career and supportive girlfriend (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). But when his younger brother (Clark Duke) gets engaged, Carter is forced to reunite his bitterly divorced parents and their new spouses (Amy Poehler and Ken Howard) for the wedding, causing the chaos of his childhood to return, including his wacky therapist (Jane Lynch).

In it the minions are as entertaining as ever, and we get a better sense of what Steve Carrell’s Gru is up to this time around. ‘Kick-Ass 2’ red-band trailer reintroduces the amazing Hit Girl and a vengeful Red Mist

Three years later we are finally getting a sequel to the breakout superhero flick Kick-Ass. Jeff Wadlow (Never Back Down) replaces Matthew Vaughn as director (Vaughn is still onboard as a producer) and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloë Grace Moretz, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse reprise their roles as Kick-Ass, Hit Girl, and the vengeful Red Mist, respectively. (Red Mist, however, bestows a new name unto himself in the sequel but I’ll won’t spoiler the reveal here.) Joining the cast is Jim Carrey as Colonel Stars and Stripes, the leader of the city’s band of vigilante superheroes. A spectacularly red-band trailer packed with gory action and a foul-mouthed (not-so-little anymore) girl awaits.

Kick-Ass 2, based on Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr.’s graphic novel, hits theatres August 16.

Movie trailer round-up: ‘Spring Breakers’, ‘Upside Down’, ‘JOBS’, ‘Oz: The Great and the Powerful’ & ‘Pacific Rim’

A groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow today and you know what that means–spring comes early. And when it does there’s a scandalous movie coming out to celebrate the occasion. Disney girls Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens are all grown up in director Harmony Korine’s upcoming flick Spring Breakers, also starring Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine, and James Franco with dreads and a grill. Basically it’s about four college girls who party too hard, land in jail, and get springed free by a local drug dealer. The trailer promises sex and drugs and money and girls. If that’s your speed, March 22 is the day to remember.
