September 14 is G.O.O.D. Music Day

According to rapper Big Sean, September 14 is going to be a huge day for the G.O.O.D. Music crew.  In the form of a tweet, Big Sean announced that his upcoming debut album Finally Famous, Kanye West’s Good Ass Job, and Kid Cudi’s Man On the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager will all release on Tuesday, September 14.  If this were to actually happen it would be INSANE.  You must realize, though, that all of these albums likely will not simultaneously drop on the same day since almost every major rap album get the “delay treatment”.  Naturally I am skeptical about the whole thing.  However, if such a day does pass I’m positive it will prove to be a fantastic marketing ploy for the G.O.O.D. Music record label (which was founded by Kanye West in 2004).  I know I’ll be first in line to purchase all three of these anticipated releases.

Since Big Sean pushed out the tweet, more G.O.O.D. Music artists have decided to jump on the release date bandwagon.  Consequence (ConsTV) and Tony Williams (King or The Fool) have publically stated that their albums will also drop 9/14.  And the cherry on top?  Rumors are swirling that John Legend is working hard to finalize his next album Wake Up (produced by The Roots) in time for the September date.  With just about two months until the day, the anticipation is killing me.  No really, it is.

Kanye West prepared for a comeback with BET Awards performance

Ever since his grave mistake of interrupting Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV Music Awards and apologizing to her and his fans on The Jay Leno Show, Kanye hid from the public spotlight.  After locking himself up in the studio to work on his upcoming album (check out the phenomenal first single here), ‘Ye is ready to perform on a stage in front of a large audience for the first time in a long time.  It’s been confirmed that he will perform at the BET Awards on June 27.  Kanye West is finally ready to show his face to the world again.  Question is–is the world ready for Mr. West?

New Kanye West song leaks — listen and download it here [Update]

The wait is over.  Late last night a brand spankin’ new Kanye West track leaked on the Internet.  It’s called “Power” and it is phenomenal.  “Power”, featuring Dwele, tells a mean and gritty and dark tale of Kanye’s controversial life thus far, and he uses it to vent off the negativity that surrounded him previous to his much needed hiatus from the spotlight.  It’s a lengthy epic that incorporates heavy drums and guitars and a blasting, deep bass in unique style that Kanye has mastered over the years.  And for all you auto-tune/singing haters, Kanye the Rapper is back.

‘Ye starts it off with: “I’m living in the 21st Century, doing something mean to it/ Do it better than anybody you ever seen do it/ Screams from the haters, got a nice ring to it/ I guess every superhero need his theme music.”  On the Taylor Swift incident: “F— ‘SNL’ and the whole cast/ Tell ’em Yeezy said they can kiss my whole ass/ More specifically they can kiss my a–hole/ I’m a a–hole?/ You n—as got jokes/ You short-minded n—as’ thoughts is Napoleon/ My furs is Mongolian/ My ice brought the goalies in.  On his hiatus: “I just needed time alone with my own thoughts/ Got treasures in my mind/ But couldn’t open up my own vault …/ Reality is catching up with me/ Taking my inner child/ I’m fighting for custody.”  To the haters: “They say I was the abomination of Obama’s nation/ Well, that’s a pretty bad way to start the conversation/ At the end of day, goddammit I’m killin’ this sh–/ I know damn well y’all feelin’ this sh–.”  Then there’s the chorus that features a sample from King Crimson’s “21st Century Schizoid Man”: “No one man should have all that power/ The clock’s tickin’, I just count the hours/ Stop trippin’, I’m trippin’ off the power/ (21st century schizoid man).”  The song closes with a verse from Dwele (who was featured on Graduation‘s “Flashing Lights”): “Now this would be a beautiful death/ Jumpin’ out the window/ Lettin’ everything go .. You got the power to let power go.”

So is this the first single off Kanye’s forthcoming album tentitively titled Good Ass Job?  No one knows for sure since this was in fact a leak.  ‘Ye’s A&R Plain Pat had this to say about the leak via Twitter: “So waaaack. Working on a record for all those months to see an unfinished leak hit the Net.”  OK, so what you’re listening to here is not the final version, but it sounds damn near close to completion.  Though Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam has not announced a release date for Good Ass Job, sources peg a late summer drop.  After listing to “Power” I pray this album does not get the delay treatment.

Update: Yesterday mid-afternoon Kanye West promised fans that a “mixed and mastered” version of “Power”, the confirmed lead single off his next album, would be released shortly.  And here it is.  I’ve updated the download link and audio clip below.  The mastered track is subtly superior to the original leak and should be replace it in your music library.  So what are you waiting for?  Have at it! Pasted above is a freaky “Power portait” created by artist George Condo.

Kanye West guest spot on ‘The Cleveland Show’ results in ultimate rap battle

Last Sunday’s episode of The Cleveland Show featured a guest voice from rapper Kanye West.  He played Stoolbend’s greatest rapper “Kenny West” and the character made a number of nods to the real life West.  If there’s anything to gain from watching this episode it’s the culmination of animosity between Kenny and Cleveland Jr.  Things play out in a rap battle that cannot be missed.  If you have some extra time, “Brotherly Love” was one of the season’s finest episodes; watch it here.  Also, peek after the break to watch a short gag from the episode that had me in knots. Single: Drake – “Find Your Love”

“Find Your Love” is the second single off Drake’s upcoming debut album Thank Me Later, due out June 15.  It’s no surprise that Kanye West produced the track.  His fingerprints can be found all over it; the heavy melodic beat takes cues from many of West’s hits off 808’s & Heartbreak.  Drake shared some kind words about Ye with MTV News:

“Before I ever got the chance to meet him, Kanye West shaped a lot of what I do, as far as music goes. We always, always, always took the time to listen to Kanye’s music and appreciate it beyond. We searched the samples and find out where his inspiration came from, because he has one of the best ears in music, period. He knows how to recognize great music that’s not his. He knows how to utilize great sounds and great music. So before I met him, I had the utmost respect for Kanye West. I’d even go as far as to say he’s the most influential person, as far as a musician, that I’d ever had in my life.”

This single is Drake’s third collab with West.  Previously they worked together on “Forever” (along with Lil Wayne & Eminem) and West directed Drake’s first music video for “Best I Ever Had.”  Drake just wrapped up the music video for “Find Your Love” in Jamaica, so be on the look out for that.

But for now, take a listen to the track below and download it here.  (It looks like the download link was taken down due to bandwith issues.  It should be back soon.)  Drake straight up sings in this one, about relationships.  He calls it “an extremely vulnerable song” and a “huge risk” because “it almost feels like the song should be performed by a woman.  I’m just hoping that men really hear the song and they’re honest with themselves.  I know a lot of men feel that way.”  After a first listen I’m not hooked yet.  But then again, I felt the same way with “Over” and now that’s one of my top played songs.

Kanye West Foundation is back for another round

The Kanye West Foundation, created by Kanye’s late mother Donda West, is all about keeping kids in school.  As an incentive to keep kids in school, they are given this ultimatum: if they improve their grades, attendance, and behavior they are offered free tickets to see Kanye West perform at the Chicago Theatre at the end of the school year.  Last year more than 2,500 students improved their grades and attendance and were able to see Kanye perform live in a televised concert (broadcasted on FuseTV) in their honor.  Currently the Foundation focuses on public high schools in Chicago, Kanye’s hometown.

This trailer promotes the second annual performance by Kanye.  Ever since his “imma let you finish but” incident with Taylor Swift, Kanye has ducked out of the limelight and into the studio.  He’s currently working on his next album rumored to be called Good Ass Job.  With the goal of diminishing student dropouts in the Chicago area, his foundation spreads a good message that hopefully resonates with the rest of the nation.  Thing is, he might just have to go on a nationwide Foundation tour to give more kids the incentive to stay in school and improve themselves.  Or you can just be really smart and set goals for yourself, then watch the performance when it airs on FuseTV this June.

Rapper is coming to The Cleveland Show as “Kenny West”

The fine folks at EW got an exclusive sneek peek at the upcoming May 2 episode of The Cleveland Show.  In it rapper Kanye West “voices a 19-year-old local hero named, er, Kenny West, who gets into a lopsided rhyme battle with the show’s Cleveland Brown, Jr. over the affections of a young woman who’s voiced by Taraji P. Henson.”  According to show co-creator Rich Appel working with West was an absolute pleasure and he expects Kenny West to “become a recurring character in our universe.”  In fact, they’ve already planned to have West return in a season 2 episode.

The Cleveland Show airs Sundays at 8PM on FOX.

Music video: Kanye West – “Coldest Winter”

Check out this fresh music video for Kanye West’s “Coldest Winter,” the final track off his 2008 album 808s & Heartbreak.  It’s directed by long time collaborator Nabil.  Available for purchase at iTunes here.

It features a young women whose breasts just don’t want to stay in her blouse and creepy dementors straight out of Harry Potter.  The song is remixed a bit in the beginning and offers another look into the psychologically dark mind state Kanye was in when he created 808s.  This is going to have to hold you up until his next album is released, which may come sooner than you think.

Kanye West’s new album already mastered?

Word on the street is that Kanye West’s fourth studio album, follow up to the auto-tune inspired 808’s & Heartbreak, is near completion.  It comes from Kanye’s cousin and collaborator Devo Springsteen.  He shared these thoughts on his Twitter account: “Heard the new Kanye West album.  Inspiring…”  Sure, evidence of its completion is not bursting from the seams with this one, but something is there.  Since nothing official concerning a new album has come from the Kanye camp, it’s hard to know what stage it’s at.  However, Springsteen did hear something and he enjoyed it enough to share his thoughts on Twitter.  I’m hoping Kanye goes back to his roots with his next album, leaving auto-tune behind.  Don’t get me wrong; 808’s & Heartbreak is one of my favorite concept rap albums, but I feel that Kanye needs to really shine with his next outing.  And the only way for him to prove to everyone he can still impact music is if he goes back to where it all started.

Kanye West’s VH1 Storytellers album out now

Sure, the world doesn’t really like Kanye West right now.  No matter what you may think about him he is still a very talented musician and deserves a listen.  A while back West performed on VH1 a bunch of his latest songs from 808s & Heartbreak as well as some of his classics.  It really was a great show.  If you’re a fan of West and his music or if you happend to miss the performance you can now purchase Storytellers on DVD.  The package includes over 70 minutes of performance footage, with three songs that were not televised (“Street Lights,” “Paranoid,” and “Homecoming”), and a Q&A session with West.  It also comes with an audio CD that includes all nine live tracks.
