NBC’s ‘Perfect Couples’ get the boot early, ‘Paul Reiser Show’ fills in

This week NBC made the decision to end midseason comedy Perfect Couples earlier than expected to make way for The Paul Reiser Show. Low ratings, per usual, are to blame for the scheduling change which more than likely will lead to the show’s cancellation. Couples will conclude its shortened first season in mid-April, having only aired 11 of the 13 ordered episodes. NBC has not specified when/if these final episodes will air at a later date (not likely) or come packaged in a DVD set. It’s strange to admit, but this show actually started to grow on me after a while. However, I won’t be complaining much once NBC officially puts the kibosh on it.

In case you’re wondering… The Paul Reiser Show is a single camera comedy that follows the actor’s post-Mad About You life. Here’s the official description: “It’s been a few years since his
hit TV series went off the air. Since then, he’s been enjoying the quiet
life at home with his lovely wife, Claire [Amy Landecker], and kids and generally minding his own business, writing and
producing television but enjoying life out of the spotlight. Getting him
into trouble — and into adventures — are a group of new “friends,”
most of which he didn’t choose since they’re the husbands of his wife’s
friends and the dads of his kids’ classmates.” It begins Thursday, April 14 at 8:30PM.

ABC takes back ‘No Ordinary Family’ episodes, cancellation in our midst?

Well this is a real bummer. ABC’s take on the superhero genre isn’t fairing well in the ratings and for that reason they’ve decided to cut two episodes from its previously increased 22-episode order. In October the alphabet network granted No Ordinary Family the safety cushion that is known as the back nine, increasing its episode count from 13 to 22. It’s all about the ratings game in TV land, and unfortunately Family is not winning. The so-so pilot attracted about 10.7 million viewers in late September, and that number has significantly dropped since. The latest episode “No Ordinary Love” which aired this past Tuesday garnered a measly 4.77 million viewers, despite hotties Tricia Helfer and Lucy Lawless making special guest appearances. The next two weeks ABC will air repeats of the show, and then it is set to return March 23 and will air its last three episodes of the season (the season finale falls on April 5).

Why I am telling you all of this? Because if happen to be a fan of this show like me (rocky start but recent surge in intriguing mythology), I thought it’d only be proper to prepare you for the inevitable. I hate to say it but ABC’s lowest-rated scripted program is likely to get the axe come this spring.

NBC decreases ‘The Cape’ episode count by three

Things are not looking good for NBC’s new superhero drama The Cape.  On the heels of a series ratings low this week, today the Peacock decided to cut the season one episode count from 13 to 10.  All signs are pointing to cancellation, so I hope you’re not too invested in these characters already.  After the five episodes that aired thus far, I’ve stuck with it but news of the cut does not come as a surprise.  As easy as it might be to criticize the show’s cheesy dialogue, lack of top notch action sequences, and poor character development, what it all comes down to is ratings for the network.  Last night’s episode drew a meager 5.3 million viewers; that’s down 6% from the previous week.  The TV watching public doesn’t seem interested in it, and soon the network won’t be either.  According to Deadline, now that The Cape will bow out earlier than expected, fans of the serial sci-fi The Event can prepare for that show to make a return on March 7 in a two-hour block.
