Apple reports 2011 Q3 earnings: $7.31b profit, $28.57b revenue, Macs up 14%, iPhones up 142%, iPads up 183%, iPods down 20%

Apple’s 2011 third quarter financial results are in and it’s reporting its best quarter ever. Apple posted a $7.31 billion profit on $28.57 billion in revenue.  Compare this to one year ago, that’s up from a profit of $3.25 billion on $15.70 billion in revenue.  Says CEO Steve Jobs: “We’re thrilled to deliver our best quarter ever, with revenue up 82 percent and profits up 125 percent. Right now, we’re very focused and excited about bringing iOS 5 and iCloud to our users this fall.”

Now let’s break it down by product category.  Apple sold 3.95 million Macs during the quarter (representing a 14 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter); a whopping 20.34 million iPhones (representing a 142 percent unit growth); 9.25 million iPads (representing a 183 percent unit growth); and 7.54 million iPods (representing an 20 percent unit decline).

Looking ahead to the third quarter, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer expects revenue of about $25 billion and diluted earnings per share of about $5.50.

Apple hits new milestone: 15 billion App Store downloads

Apple recently announced that over 15 billion apps have been downloaded from its App Store by the more than 200 million iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users worldwide. Wowzers is the reaction you’re looking for. Apple’s tallied ’em up, and currently the App Store is now home to over 425,000 apps; additionally 100,000 native iPad apps exist. Thanks to Apple’s generosity the people who make the apps are getting paid, too; Apple has paid developers over $2.5 billion to date (there’s a 70/30 split, the devs receive the smaller sampling, naturally).

Says Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing: “In just three years, the revolutionary App Store has grown to become the most exciting and successful software marketplace the world has ever seen. Thank you to all of our amazing developers who have filled it with over 425,000 of the coolest apps and to our over 200 million iOS users for surpassing 15 billion downloads.”

Apple teases iOS 5 and iCloud service days before WWDC; iWork comes to iPhone & iPod touch

This Monday, June 6 Steve Jobs and company will take the stage at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference. It had previously been hinted that Apple would be diving into the worlds of iOS and Mac OS at the event, but now thanks to a brief but promising press release we know this: Apple will be unveiling the eighth major release of Mac OS X called Lion, the next version of their mobile operating system dubbed iOS 5, and iCloud, “Apple’s upcoming cloud services offering.” All signs point to the company demonstrating a music locker service similar to Google and Amazon’s recent offerings, but this is Apple and you know Jobs has something magical up his sleeve. Per usual, keep it here for the breaking news come Monday. Though it might not feature the next iPhone, this keynote looks like it’ll be a memorable one. Apple–to the cloud! Full PR after the break.

In related Apple news, the iWork suite is now available for all iOS devices. Pages, Keynote, and Numbers can now be installed and run on iPhones and iPod touches, in addition to the iPad. Specifically they are universal apps that run on iPad and iPad 2, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, and iPod touch (3rd & 4th generation). Android still dominates smartphone sales, Apple gains much ground

It’s time to take a closer look into the exciting and ever-expanding smartphone market. The NPD Group, a market research company, has done some number crunching for us to determine US smartphones sales for the first quarter of 2011. They break it down by smartphone manufacturer: Android-powered smartphones accounted for 50 percent of smartphone unit sales in Q1 2011 (falling 3 percent from last quarter); Apple’s iOS gained some ground jumping 9 percentage points to comprise 28 percent of smartphone sales; and RIM remains in a distant third place, dropping 3 percentage points to 14 percent for the quarter. Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for NPD, explains Apple’s growth and Android dip (spoiler alert: it’s the Verizon iPhone’s fault): “Apple and Verizon had a very successful launch of the iPhone 4, which allowed the iPhone to expand its market share that was previously held back by its prolonged carrier exclusivity with AT&T. While some of that growth came at the expense of Android operating system (OS), Android models still accounted for half of all smartphones sold in the quarter.” Thanks to the iPhone being available on the world’s two largest carriers, Apple (14 percent) is now the third-largest handset brand in the US behind LG (18 percent) and Samsung (23 percent).

Here are a couple fun facts for you to chew on. This quarter marks the first time a majority (54 percent) of all new mobile-phone handsets purchased by U.S. consumers were smartphones. Woohoo, yay technology! And here are the five top-selling mobile phone in the country: iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, Motorola Droid X, HTC EVO 4G, and HTC Droid Incredible. Go Apple and HTC!

iPhone 4 to receive new coat of paint tomorrow

The day has finally arrived. Apple figured out how to make an iPhone 4 a color other than black. In June 2010 at WWDC Apple announced the latest version of the iPhone and showed off the beautiful hardware in two colors: black and white. Claiming manufacturing problems, the company delayed the launch of the white model on numerous occasions, to the point where everyone started to suspect Jobs & co. would simply wait for iPhone 5 to introduce the new hue. Well now we can all put those worries to rest; today Apple released a press statement (located after the break) saying that the white iPhone will arrive in stores tomorrow, April 28 around the world.

Says Phil Schiller, Apple’s SVP of Worldwide Product Marketing: “The white iPhone 4 has finally arrived and it’s beautiful. We appreciate everyone who has waited patiently while we’ve worked to get every detail right.”

And here are the deets: White iPhone 4 models will be available from Apple’s online store, at Apple’s retail stores, AT&T and Verizon Wireless stores, and select Apple Authorized Resellers. The following countries will see phantom handset in their stores starting tomorrow: Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Macau, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, UK and the US. Besides change in color, the hardware remains the same as the black model and so does pricing: $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB–on contract with a wireless carrier.

Hip hip….now when’s iPhone 5 coming out?

Apple reports 2011 Q2 earnings: $5.99b profit, Macs up 28%, iPhones up 113%, iPods down 17%

It’s happened again… Apple’s 2011 second quarter financial results are in and it’s another record-breaking one for the tech company. Apple posted a $5.99 billion profit on $24.67 billion in revenue.  Compare this to one year ago, that’s up from a profit of $3.07 billion on $13.5 billion in revenue.  Says CEO Steve Jobs: “With quarterly revenue growth of 83 percent and profit growth of 95 percent, we’re firing on all cylinders. We will continue to innovate on all fronts throughout the remainder of the year.”

Now let’s break it down by product category.  Apple sold 3.76 million Macs during the quarter (representing a 28 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter); 18.65 million iPhones (representing a 86 percent unit growth); and 9.02 million iPods (representing an 17 percent unit decline).  It was specified that the company sold 4.69 million iPads during the quarter, and we can compare this total to the number of iPad sold in 2011 Q1: 7.33 million.

Apple’s WWDC 2011 begins June 6

Today Apple announced that it will hold its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (otherwise known as WWDC) June 6 through June 10 at San Francisco’s Moscone West. According to the press release, “Apple will unveil the future of iOS and Mac OS, including exciting demonstrations of the new kinds of apps that developers can build using Apple’s advanced frameworks and more than 100 technical sessions presented by Apple engineers.” In years past, we’ve come to expect the unveiling of the next-generation iPhone at WWDC. According to various sources (All Things DThe LoopDaring Fireball), however, iPhone 5 will likely not make an appearance at this year’s event. Hardware announcement(s) will wait for the fall (updated iPhone and/or iPad hardware may show up during Apple’s September event for new iPods) and WWDC will strictly highlight software–that is, iOS 5 and Mac OS X Lion. Look after the break for the full PR.
