TV teasers: ‘Bates Motel’ spins out of control & ‘Orphan Black’ journeys down the rabbit hole
Psycho prequel series Bates Motel has been airing on A&E for three years now and it gets better and better because each season viewers are witness to Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) sinking deeper and deeper into his insanity. His obsession with his mother Norma (Vera Farmiga) is worsening as he continues to lose grip on reality. This brand new season 4 teaser is the best metaphor; Norman is spiraling out of control as we inch closer to the Norman we know from Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film. Plus, the all-to-brief clip brings back into focus themes like Norman’s peeping tom, Norma’s gun, Miss Watson’s pearls, and it culminates in a familiar setting that I wouldn’t dare spoil.

Ylvis, makers of “What does the fox say,” returns to take on a cappella
The Norwegian brothers who answered the longing question, “What does the fox say?” and attempted to explain “Stonehenge” are back with a new trancing music video that takes on the a cappella craze that’s still storming the nation (see: Pitch Perfect and its sequel, The Sing-Off, Pentatonix). In it, Vegard and Bård Ylvisåker are members of an a capella group whose apparent sole mission is to stave off bullies by making pit stops along their tour route at schools where children need a helping hand, er, voice. This latest viral parody by Ylvis includes the tried-and-true ingredients they’ve used before: it’s very silly while simultaneously wanting to be somewhat serious as it makes fun of a cappella tropes and takes down bullies in the most non-violent manner possible. Oh, and no surprise here–the song happens to be extremely catchy so I’ll save you a step in finding the tune for keeps. Catch a funny behind-the-scenes look after the break.

Netflix shares a ‘Daredevil’ tapestry as season 2 secures a launch date
The Netflix/Marvel marriage has already proven fruitful with engrossingly dark and dramatic tales introducing Daredevil and Jessica Jones. The next superhero origin story coming to the streaming service is Luke Cage, but before we get there, the next chapter in the story of Matt Murdock aka The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen will be told.
Season 2 of Daredevil introduces new villain The Punisher (played by The Walking Dead‘s Jon Bernthal) and Elektra Natchios (Elodie Yung). Here’s the official logline:
Just when Matt thinks he is bringing order back to the city, new forces are rising in Hell’s Kitchen. Now the Man Without Fear must take on a new adversary in Frank Castle and face an old flame – Elektra Natchios. Bigger problems emerge when Frank Castle, a man looking for vengeance, is reborn as The Punisher, a man who takes justice into his own hands in Matt’s neighborhood. Meanwhile, Matt must balance his duty to his community as a lawyer and his dangerous life as the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, facing a life-altering choice that forces him to truly understand what it means to be a hero.
The first teaser is embedded above, and while it doesn’t contain new footage, it artfully summarizes the major story beats that unfolded last year. Its direction borrows from a certain philosophical HBO series, does it not? Peek into the photo gallery for season 2 first looks at Murdock (Charlie Cox) suited up, his pals Karen and Foggy (Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson), The Punisher and Elektra. The character-filled season 2 poster is in there, too.
Daredevil returns Friday, March 18.
‘Blue Mountain State’ gets Kickstarted into feature length film (Teaser inside!)
Blue Mountain State. You might have missed this under-the-radar comedy series back when it aired on Spike from 2010-11. It was rather swiftly cancelled after airing three 13-episode seasons. In fact, I almost carried on with my life without acknowledging its existence because on its surface (hell, through and through), it’s a crude show about the stereotypical college experience following football players and all the immature mayhem that ensues (read: partying, drugs, alcohol, hazing, sex…I think you get the point). But man am I glad I actually gave this thing a shot. BMS‘ creators and executive producers Chris Romano and Eric Falconer are just the right amount of twisted and they managed to concoct a hysterical exaggeration of a football-dominated college. Though the wacky characters don’t have much depth, the hijinks they take part in are just grounded in reality that it makes Blue Mountain State required viewing for incoming college freshman nationwide.
Moving on to the story at hand! Ever since its abrupt cancellation in 2011, BMS fans have been clamoring for new material, including a new season and/or a movie. Following a successful Kickstarter campaign created by Falconer, BMS will return on the big screen. In total, 23,999 backers pledged $1,911,827 to support the sitcom’s anticipated comeback. Lionsgate is distributing the film with an expected launch into theatres sometime this year. Worried about BMS‘ envelope-pushing nature not translating well? Don’t be. Falconer has shared to Kickstarter backers that the MPAA originally slapped an NC-17 rating on his movie, but after some tweaks he was able to lower that to a R-rating for “strong crude and sexual content, drug use and language throughout, and some graphic nudity.” Sounds like BMS to me!
Here’s what we know. The movie is called Blue Mountain State: The Rise of Thadland and it will follow senior year at BMS as Thad Castle (Alan Ritchson) prepares to enter the NFL. Darin Brooks and Chris Romano reprise series protagonists Alex Moran and Sammy Cacciatore, and you can expect the rest of the ensemble cast to make appearances throughout. Search giant Google and social networks Twitter and Facebook are here to provide retrospective, analytical, and all-encompassing telescopes looking back at the year 2015; let the good, the bad, and everything in-between comes into focus.
Posted above is Google’s Year in Search video and it brings to life the queries we searched and the questions and answers they brought forth. The Paris attacks, Star Wars, water on Mars, Cecil the Lion; all of the major crises and celebrations are accounted for in this clip and beyond. Google’s A Year in Search portal is an interactive way to explore what went down in 2015 around the world. There’s even a Top Charts section that breaks down the top searches across a wide range of categories. The top 10 U.S. searches in 2015? YouTube reminds you to Rewind and take a look back at the most viral memes and trends of 2015. The clip embedded above is the video streaming site’s annual YouTube Rewind celebration that remixes some of the most popular songs of the year and superimposes YouTube stars in front of scenic landscapes and shiny arenas. Though you may not recognize all of the youthful faces here, it’s definitely a fun recap of what we embraced on the Internet this year.
And now, check out the top 10 most popular YouTube clips of the year, based on “the amount of time people spent watching, sharing, commenting, liking, and more,” according to YT. I don’t know how he does it, but year after year DJ Earworm manages to fuse the biggest songs both musically and visually in something I’ve endearingly labeled a mega-mashup. This go-around, he’s challenged himself to take on Billboard’s top 50 tracks (that’s up from the typical 25 he deals with) and it shouldn’t come as a surprise that he utterly nails it. ‘Orphan Black’ season 4 kicks into gear with flashy teaser and mysterious new clone
Clone Clubbers, perk up! Posted above is the first official teaser for Orphan Black season 4. There’s not much to glean from it, except for the fact that it features an artificial eye embedded with cameras. Someone’s watching us, but who could it be? Perhaps it’s teasing Rachel Duncan’s new prosthetic eye. Some are even theorizing that it’s hinting at Delphine’s rise from the ashes? Either way, it’s slick, and this quick clip alone is enough to get the blood pumping for a new season of The Tatiana Maslany Show.
But if that simply isn’t enough to whet your appetite, hold on to your hands, because series creators John Fawcett and Graeme Manson are already teasing a brand new clone set to make her debut in the next season. In an interview with EW, Fawcett and Manson reveal her mysterious name, M.K., and describe her as “this slightly traumatized clone who has a deep past.” Click here to scan the rest of the informative exchange, and pop into the gallery below to visualize the masked clone who has “been self-aware for some time” and “knows more than [Sarah and] us.” Why the sheep mask? Return to ‘Twin Peaks’ in this scenic, mysterious first look
Twin Peaks, the cult mystery drama from David Lynch and Mark Frost, is primed to make its comeback 25 years after it aired his season 2 finale in June 1991. Just like Laura Palmer promised. Well, 26 years later to be exact now that Lynch and Showtime are confirming a 2017 premiere window. Still, that’s pretty eerie if you ask me and that’s just how Lynch likes it. The official logline for the new season doesn’t spill much of anything, but it’ll remind you about what’s come before.
Widely considered one of the most groundbreaking and influential broadcast series of all time, TWIN PEAKS followed the inhabitants of a quaint northwestern town who were stunned after their homecoming queen Laura Palmer was shockingly murdered. The town’s sheriff welcomed the help of FBI agent Dale Cooper, who came to town to investigate the case. As Cooper conducted his search for Laura’s killer, the town’s secrets were gradually exposed. The mystery that ensued set off an eerie chain of events that plunged the inhabitants of Twin Peaks into a darker examination of their very existence. Twenty-five years later, the story continues…
Much of the original cast is expected to return, though it’s only Kyle MacLachlan’s FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper who’s officially confirmed to reprise. Well, MacLachlan and now Michael Horse who played Deputy Tommy “Hawk” Hill during the series’ original incarnation. Horse, who still looks pretty much the same minus a few grey hairs, is featured in this first look at the long-anticipated return to Twin Peaks.
“Location sometimes becomes a character,” Horse says in the scenic clip first shared by Lynch via Twitter. “There are a lot of holy places up here, a lot of sacred places. Can’t put my finger on how I would describe it. It just touches something in the psyche. It’s almost like being in a moving painting.”
It feels good to be home, you know, “five miles south of the Canadian border, and twelve miles west of the state line,” in the bizarre wilderness that is the fictional town of Twin Peaks. The iconic waterfall and surrounding lush forest look absolutely stunning filmed in HD. Curious to see that the same number of residents reside in the town, even 25 years later; the sign counter remains stuck at 51,201. Also remaining in tact is composer Angelo Badalamenti’s memorable theme and the same credit font, now even shinier than before. The teaser ends just as it should, strange and mysterious. An unfocused man with white hair holding his arms up shakes the camera and the music goes haywire before fading out. Who could it be? Some might say it’s the return of Leland Palmer, but my bet’s on Lynch. This could be the series co-creator having fun with fans, and let’s not forget that he played FBI Agent Gordon Cole so this could hint at another character reprisal.

The Beatles comes to streaming services just in time for the holidays (Update)
Nearly five years to the day that The Beatles finally embraced the digital world of music by releasing their famed catalog on iTunes, the Fab Four are now officially offering their 13 studio albums and 4 essential collections on music streaming services. The most prolific streamers like Spotify and Apple Music are featuring The Beatles music today, along with other industry players including Google Play, Amazon Prime Music, Tidal, Deezer, Slacker Radio, Rhapsody, and Microsoft Groove. Back in 2011 when the band landed on iTunes, it quickly sold 2 million songs and 450,000 albums during its first week on Apple’s music store. Looking forward to finding out how the streaming community picks up on their sudden inclusion.
