Microsoft’s Kin phones back from the grave

Just when you were started to think you’d never hear Microsoft Kin again, the failed smartphone duo found their way back to Verizon.  The Kin devices haven’t changed physically since making their way back from the grave; they look the same on the outside and their sub-par specs are still in tact.  What has changed is price.  The Kin ONEm sells for $19.99 with a new two-year contract ($119.99 without), and it’s bigger brother Kin TWOm costs $49.99 on contract ($219.99 without).  Monthly plans start at $39.99 for talk and $9.99 for 25MB of data.  Definitely cheaper than what Verizon was offering before Microsoft shelved Kin after only three short months on the market.  Don’t expect to see much a future for the Kin platform; reintroducing these phones on Verizon now is Microsoft’s plan to wipe out their warehouses of the device they killed.

Microsoft Kin now available online, in Verizon stores May 13

Generation Upload, listen here: Microsoft Kin devices are now available to purchase online and you can pick one up in a Verizon Wireless store near you come May 13.  The Kin One goes for $49.99 and the Kin Two sits at $99.99, both after a $100 mail-in rebate and a new two-year customer agreement, of course.  Big Red reminds us that “to get the most from Kin” you must subscribe to the Verizon Wireless Nationwide Talk ($39.99) and an Email and Web for Smartphone($29.99) plans.  A bit pricey for a smart dumbphone that’s limited in functionality if you ask me.  But alas, it won’t be long until you can get your Kin Loop, Spot, & Studio on; it’s just a mere three days away!  PR after the break.

Are you a Gleek? There’s an app for you.

Designed by Smule (the musical geniuses behind Ocarina, Leaf Trombone, I Am T-Pain, and Magic Piano apps), the Glee music app puts you behind the mic and lets you belt out your favorite songs from the FOX hit show.  Here’s how it works.  You got your iPhone or iPad, right?  Plug in some headphones to get the background music pumping.  Hit start and music plays in the ‘phones while the lyrics scroll across the screen.  Now sing.  There’s a live pitch meter that let’s know if you’re in tune or not.  But it doesn’t end there.  Say you can’t sing all-natural and need some help.  The app automatically auto-tunes your voice and generates harmonies from your voice.  Neat-o, right!?  Once you’re done recording a song, you can share it with friends on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, or email (or the entire Glee app network) and listen to other Gleeks rocking out.  Everything is stored on Smule’s servers for easy access right from the app.  If you choose to “broadcast” your recorded song, other app users can find the track and sing on top of it, creating a band-like experience.  A world-wide Glee Club, if you will.

The Glee app is available at the App Store today for $2.99.  It comes with three tracks (“Rehab”, “Somebody to Love”, and “You Keep Me Hanging On”) and Smule promises to add new tracks every week.  They will appear as in-app purchases.  So far, the Glee “music store” includes the following additional songs: “Can’t Fight This Feeling”, “Imagine”, “I’ll Stand By You”, “Lean On Me”, and “No Air”.  The social aspects work over WiFi and 3G.  Well, what are you waiting for!? Gleek out!  (See how it’s done after the break.)

Microsoft Kin: the device for “Generation Upload”

On Monday Microsoft finally lifted the covers off ancient rumored devices dubbed “Microsoft Pink” by introducing their next foray into the mobile space called Microsoft Kin.  Microsoft recently aquired Danger, the company behind the Sidekick; created with Sharp, the Kin devices are essentially next-generation Sidekicks.  At its core, and well all around it, Kin is a social networking phone aimed at tweens.  Microsoft is calling its target market “Generation Upload”, 15-30 year olds who are all about chatting, texting, taking and sharing photos, and constantly updating their favorite social networks like Facebook and Twitter.  Note that Kin is not a smartphone; smart dumbphone is more like it.  Although it’s built upon Windows Phone 7 and shares similar UI aesthetics, it can’t run apps and it’s closed off to many other WP7 features like Xbox Live.  This is all by design, really, since Microsoft is really pushing it strcitly as a social networking device.  Kin contains two family members, Kin One and Kin Two.  Both devices contain three unique features: Kin Loop, Kin Spot, and Kin Studio.

Kin Loop: This is your home screen.  It’s the place where all your social network content gets aggregated and displayed.  Loop aggregates information from four selected services: Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and Windows Live.  Information is updated in real time (well, every fifteen minutes unless you manually hit refresh).  So what you need to understand is this: the device does not run apps for these services; they live on the phone at all times.  Your profile picture and current status is visible at the top of the screen.  The rest of Loop is covered in recently updated statuses from the friends you converse with most often.  If you want to delve deeper into their page, simply tap their picture and you’ll be transported to their standard profile page.

Kin Spot: There’s a small green spot located at the bottom center of the screen at all times.  This dot allows you to collate all kinds of stuff and share it all with your friends.  For example, if there’s a picture, video website, status update, or map you want to share with one of your contacts, simply drag and drop the content into Spot and you’re one tap away from sending it off to your friends.  Enter Spot by tapping it and select the contact and content you want to share.  Content can be shared over SMS, email, or social networks.

Kin Studio: This is where all your device’s content is stored online.  Everything that you have on your Kin (contacts, pictures, videos, etc.) is backed up to “the cloud.”  In this case the cloud is Kin Studio, a website based on Silverlight that can be accessed on any computer.  So if you lose your Kin, all the data that’s on it continues to thrive online at Studio.  Also, Studio makes for a great way to watch and enjoy your Kin’s content on a larger display.  Studio’s UI is impressive; it features a visual timeline and supports geotagging in a map, allowing you to pinpoint exactly when, say, a photo was taken, and where it was taken, respectively.  It’s a very seamless experience; if you update something in Studio (for example, add a video), the change will take effect on your Kin device, and vice versa.

Kin also comes loaded with a custom IE web browser.  The display is capacitive with multitouch support, enabling pinch-to-zoom in the browser, but there is no Flash or Silverlight functionality.  Also included is a fully functional Zune player (hrm, minus Zune gaming), allowing for music, video, and radio playback.  Zune on Kin will provide the same experience found on Zune HD players and (soon) WP7 devices.  You can stream music over WiFi and 3G and there’s full support for Zune Pass, meaning you will always have access to your entire Zune library.  For Mac users, Microsoft will be providing software to sideload your iTunes music and iPhoto pictures to a Kin device.  Note, this is not a Zune client for Mac, it just a way to get a Mac user’s content from Mac to Kin; no Zune Marketplace access for you!  Now let’s distinguish between the two members of the family. Fringe retro title sequence

Fringe fans, how neat was this retro title sequence that played out at the beginning of the show’s best episode yet?  In “Peter,” we were finally told about the heartbreaking story concerning Walter and his dying son and how he stole alternate universe Peter from Walternate.  Clearly the producers wanted to have some fun with this flashback episode, and so they altered the title sequence and changed the font of the hovering location words when the places being shown were set in the past.  Thank goodness FOX renewed Fringe.  Cue sigh of relief.  (Look after the break to compare this to the standard opening sequence.)

Colbert hosts Dean Kamen and his advanced prosthetic arm

Dean Kamen is known to many as the inventor of the failed Segway transportation vehicle.  But now he’s clearly moved on to bigger and better things.  In conjunction with the Defense Department and DARPA, Kamen’s been developing an advanced prosthetic arm internally called “Luke” (named after Luke Skywalker).  Luke is being made specifically for injured U.S. troops who tragically lose their arms in battle.  It is by for the most impressive prosthetic I’ve ever seen in practical use.  See for yourself in the video above.

Music video: Aloe Blacc – “I Need A Dollar”

Aloe Blacc just put out a music video for “I Need A Dollar,” the catchy tune I discovered watching the opening credits of HBO’s How To Make It In America.  This track is the first single off Blacc’s debut album Good Things, due out this summer.  The music video splits the screen in half; one side follows a hustler walking the city streets and the other features Blacc singing.  At 2:35 the video begins to play a part of his second single titled “Take Me Back.”  He’s got a great old-school soul sound, something that’s missing in mainstream music today.  I’m really looking forward to the album.

Iron Man 2 will be shown in IMAX theatres

The sequel to Jon Favreau’s blockbuster smash will be shown in IMAX theatres nationwide!  Marvel Studios COO Tim Connors: “The success of the first Iron Man movie catapulted the franchise from the comic books to theatre screens, and we’re excited that the IMAX format will offer fans an even more immersive way to experience the sequel.”  No news of 3D inclusion, but I’ll take it!

Can multitouch save the mouse?

Microsoft Research believes it can.  The video above goes behind-the-scenes at MS Research, revealing five prototype mice that are still in the works.  They include “cap mouse,” “FTIR (Frustrated Total Internal Reflection) mouse, “orb mouse,” “arty (articulated) mouse,” and “side mouse.”  Each of them use a different method of multitouch to perform on-screen action.  They are like multitouch track pads featured in laptops but converted and developed in mouse form.  Very interesting stuff, to say the least.  I’m glad to see Microsoft taking a look at unique and intuitive input methods for the future.  With word of a new multi-touch capable Apple Mighty Mouse in the works, this was a timely move for Microsoft.

Latest PS3 ads feature Nazis, Joan of Arc [Updated]

And I thought we had seen the creepiest, strangest ads from Sony already for it’s Playstation 3.

These latest ads feature a “gamer” giving a blood transfusion to a Nazi soldier and a heart transplant to Joan of Arc.  Sony PR, you might have gone a wee bit too far this time.

Update: Apparently this was a “mock campaign” and Sony never officially signed off on these outlandish creations.  Check out what Cristián Lehuedé B., the president of BBDO Chile (the advertisement company behind these ads) has to say on the matter after the break.

Lost: The Final Season: characters returning, end date marked

Lost Picture

I love me my Lost news.  Let’s get right to it!

Remember that exclusive image I posted from Comic Con a while back now?  Well here it is in all it’s visible glory!  From left to right we can make out Faraday, Boone, Miles, Michael, Ana Lucia, Charlotte, Shannon, Desmond, Eko, Kate, Jack, Sawyer, Locke, Ben, Sayid, Libby, Sun, Jin, Claire, Hurley, Juliet, Charlie, Frank, Richard, Bernard, and Rose.  Notice Locke is facing away for reasons not fully explained yet.  Who is missing from the poster is equally important: Walt, Nikki, and Paulo.  Well, maybe not so much the latter two.  But where’s Walt??  WALT!!!  He was a season regular back in the beginning, and it is strange that he is not featured here alongside his season regulars (and some non-regulars) from over the years.  Check out the gallery below for up close shots of the poster to see for yourself.

In related news, EW has reported that Ian Somerhalder (Boone) is en route to Hawaii.  This can mean only one thing.  In fact Somerhalder confirms it: “I’m literally getting on a plane in 45 minutes to fly to Hawaii.  The only thing I can say is that I’m going back for several episodes….I have a script that weighs like 200 pounds, but I don’t really know what’s happening.”  This pretty much officially confirms Boone’s return to the island (or mainland), and the poster points to the remainder of the MIA/dead characters returning to the show.

And finally, I have exciting and sad news bunched into one.  The date has been pegged for the series finale of Lost: Wednesday, May 19th, 2010.  I just shed and tear and swallowed the bittersweet taste.

Look forward to LOST: The Final Season this January on ABC.
