Adrianne Palicki is Wonder Woman

Here is the very first image of Adrianne Palicki (Friday Night Lights) suited up as Wonder Woman. NBC wants to reboot the classic 1970s series and they’ve tapped David E. Kelley to write and executive produce it. Can the man with a TV degree in law (The Practice, Ally McBeal, Boston Public, Boston Legal, Harry’s Law) successfully bring back the DC Comics superheroine in a way that is relevant and exciting? Time will tell. But for now gaze at the wonderful image sitting above. Palicki certainly has the looks to play the part. But I’ll wait for a teaser before making any further judgement. Cary Elwes (Saw), Tracie Thoms (Cold Case), Pedro Pascal (The Good Wife), and Elizabeth Hurley are attached to the Warner Bros TV project.

Marc Webb’s Spidey reboot gets a name and it is ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’

Finally; we are no longer required to refer to the new Spidey franchise as the “Marc Webb reboot.” Today Columbia Pictures announced the title of the flick: The Amazing Spider-Man. That happens to be the name of the original Spidey comic book and makes a great title for upcoming movie because we know that it will take place during Peter Parker’s youthful high school years. Inside the press release the studio attached the first image of Andrew Garfield in the famous full mask and suit; if you’ll recall the previous image we saw featured Garfield in the suit sans the mask. Looks awesome, huh? The attention to detail here is absolutely phenomenal. Take a look at the wrists–those are mechanical web shooters! (Jump after the break to download a larger, hi-res version of the image.)

The Amazing Spider-Man, starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen, and Sally Field, releases in 3D on July 3, 2012. (Long wait, I know.)

Single: Lady Gaga – “Born This Way”

After posting online teaser artwork and lyrics to her long-awaited and hyped new single “Born This Way,” Lady Gaga finally catered to her mass following of Little Monsters by releasing the track in full before she performs it live at the Grammys this Sunday. In essence the thumping track is an anthem for the gay community. During the outro she whispers, “Same DNA, but born this way.” It’s certainly a catchy tune that will grow on you over time. Interestingly, the song took ten minutes for Gaga to compose. She told Vogue, “I wrote it in ten f—ing minutes, and it is a completely magical message song. And after I wrote it, the gates just opened, and the songs kept coming. It was like an immaculate conception.” Her second album also titled Born This Way is due out this May. Listen to the song above, download it at iTunes here. Hop after the break to see the tease and final cover art. Continue reading Single: Lady Gaga — “Born This Way”

Nokia and Microsoft enter into a “strategic alliance”

Bombshell alert! Nokia is ditching its homemade mobile operating systems (read: Symbian and MeeGo) for Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7. Today Nokia’s newly appointed CEO Stephen Elop announced that the Finnish company will enter into a “strategic alliance” with Microsoft that will make Windows Phone 7 Nokia’s “principal smartphone strategy.” Elop is hopeful that the marriage between these two companies will result in “a new global mobile ecosystem” based around Nokia’s hardware design and Microsoft’s software architecture. Says the official press release: “Nokia will help drive and define the future of Windows Phone. Nokia will contribute its expertise on hardware design, language support, and help bring Windows Phone to a larger range of price points, market segments and geographies.”

They’ve also addressed how Nokia’s services will mesh with WP7. Bing will power Nokia’s search services across Nokia devices; Microsoft adCenter will provide search advertising services on Nokia’s line of devices; and Nokia Maps will be a core part of Microsoft’s mapping services. Nokia’s previously announced Qt development framework will not provided to developers to make apps for Nokia WP7 devices; instead they will be working with Microsoft’s Windows Phone Developer Tools. Ovi Store, Nokia’s content and application store, will integrate with Windows Marketplace.

In a stock exchange release, Nokia lays out their future. “[They] expect 2011 and 2012 to be transition years, as the company invests to build the planned winning ecosystem with Microsoft.” The transition is expected to begin immediately (in fact, Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer publicly stated that the WP7 engineering team has been working closely with Nokia hardware designers for some time now) and Nokia hopes to start shipping WP7-powered devices in significant volume by 2012.

What’s going to happen to Symbian and MeeGo, you ask? Nokia expects to continue to sell many Symbian powered devices in the coming years, but the long-term plan is to eventually and quite abruptly kill off the platform as soon as the WP7 devices make their way into the marketplace. MeeGo, on the other hand, will “become an open-source, mobile operating system project.” Though Nokia plans to ship the first MeeGo based device later this year, they see the brand “not as part of another broad smarpthone platform strategy, but as an opportunity to learn” (read: an experimental platform to help drive future innovation).

To the dismay of the majority of Finnish engineers, I am excited about Nokia’s partnership with Microsoft. To be frank, Symbian and (especially) MeeGo were taking an interminable amount of time to develop and catch up to the competition (read: iOS, Android). It is interesting to note that Nokia was contemplating an alliance with Google to bring the Android platform to Nokia devices, but in the end, says Elop, his company “would have difficulty differentiating within that ecosystem” and the “commoditization risk was very high–prices, profits, everything being pushed down, value being moved out to Google which was concerning to us.” I think this is the perfect marriage, really. Nokia is known for making beautifully detailed, sophisticated hardware and Microsoft’s newborn sleek WP7 OS seems like a natural fit. After years of being stuck in a rut, it was time to shake up the chain of command and with Elop in charge it’s clear to see that he’s a staunch believer in steadfast change, even if it means dropping everything (on the software side) for something starkly different and exciting. I’m looking forward to what Nokia and Microsoft cook up in the coming years. If you want a hint at whats to come, hop after the break to see a mockup of Nokia/WP7 conceptual devices scored exclusively by Engadget. Also there you’ll find a related video spelling out the day’s shattering news.

Captain America poses for ‘AVENGE’ poster

As Captain America: The First Avenger inches closer to its July 22 release, Marvel plans to release content the ramp up anticipation.  First up is this war-themed poster featuring Cap, his shield, and dirt flying everywhere. The word AVENGE sits in the middle–is this a hint as to what’s to come in the movie (will he avenge Pearl Harbor?) or is it simply a nod to the upcoming superheros fest The Avengers? Time will tell, but for now I like what I see.

Meet singer/songwriter Skylar Grey

“Love The Way You Lie” is a Grammy-nominated song performed by all-star rapper Eminem and Barbados native Rihanna.  Great song, isn’t it?  Wouldn’t you like to know the the true artist who originally invented it?  Her name is Skylar Grey and if you haven’t heard of her yet that’s because she’s just now stepping out of her songwriter role and into the artist spotlight.  But you’ve certainly heard her.  In addition to writing RiRi’s smash hit, the 24-year-old talent has been credited with penning T.I.’s “Castle Walls”, Diddy-Dirty Money’s “Coming Home” and most recently she’s showing off her vocal chops in the hooks for Dr. Dre’s “I Need a Doctor” and Lupe Fiasco’s “Words I Never Said.” After living a life under her birth name Holly Hafferman experimenting with music since 2003 (she’s the one featured in Fort Minor’s “Where’d You Go”), Skylar Grey admits today that “I’m not primarily a songwriter for other people. I really am an artist.”  And she’s proving that on the Dre and Lupe cuts for sure.

Let’s back track to “Love the Way You Life” for a minute.  Contrary to what you might have thought, the track that’s currently featured on Rihanna album Loud actually started out as a demo track written and performed by Grey. “I wrote the demo initially for myself because I thought, ‘Oh, I have this big song, and now I have a little bit of a launching pad to put out my own stuff,'” she says. “As soon as Rihanna and her team heard my demo, they were like, ‘Oh, we want it for Rihanna’s album,’ so I had to make the decision if I was going to let them have it or not. But I did and so it was on Rihanna’s album, too.”  “I still felt like it would be cool to let people hear my version of it, too,” she says and so there it is embedded above for you to hear.  She’s damn good, isn’t she?

She’s on her way to stardom.  Mega-producer Alex Da Kid recently signed her to his record label Wonderland Music and she’s going to the Grammys expecting to scoop up to five awards for “Love the Way You Lie.”  Masterful pianist, singer/songwriter in the making–watch out for Skylar Grey.  Sneak a better look at her after the break.

The no-frills record player

Designer R.D. Silva has created the most bare bones record player you’ve probably ever seen.  I mean just look at it.  A motor that turns the platter sits in the middle, the pivoting arm and needle hang off to the side, and the built in speaker and controls are housed in small compartment below.  Its minimalist design is simply elegant…and I want one.

Cameron’s house from ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ is on sale

Who could forget that famous scene from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off when Cameron throws a fit and accidentally kicks his father’s Ferrari out the glass garage and into the woods.  Well, now you can own Cam’s home for a cool $1.65 million, because it recently hit the market!  The Highland Park, Illinois home is located at 370 Beech Street on a one acre lot with 43,560 square feet.  The house, designed by famous architects A. James Speyer and David Haid and built in 1953, contains 5,300 square feet of living space including 4 bedrooms, 4 baths, and floor-to-ceiling windows.  Interested?  Here’s the actual listing.  And don’t worry–the garage has been fixed up since the 1986 mishap.  You know what’d be really cool?  If the same person who won the auctioned Ferrari 250GT Spyder California used in the movie also purchased the home.  Check out shots of the interior after the break.

Starbucks to roll out massive ‘Trenta’ cup size this May

My oh my has that cup grown.  This week Starbucks announced that they will be introducing their biggest cup size yet–the 31-ounce ‘Trenta’–on May 3, 2011.  To put things into perspective for you, Trenta is 7 ounces larger than a Venti.  Trenta sized cups will cost 50 cents more than their Venti brethren and there’s a catch: customers will only be able to order iced coffee and iced tea if they want to leave the shop with a Trenta in hand.  Starbucks will begin the rollout in 14 states (including Virginia, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Hawaii and Arizona) on January 18, it will hit California shops on February 1, and it will make its way to all 50 states on May the third.

The National Post put together a handy chart that pits the Trenta against the other coffee cup sizes and the human stomach.  Fun, startling fact: Trenta’s 916 millilter size is larger than the human stomach’s “average” 900 milliliter capacity.  Uh, yikes.  Look after the break to find said infographic.

Well, it’s certainly not as big as the 128 fl oz Plenta cup, but at this pace we’re well on our way.

NEW LOOK! Chris Evans in full Captain America costume

We’ve already seen Chris Evans dressed as Captain America on the cover of EW’s October issue this past fall.  But check out this new look where we find Evans dressed in the FULL Cap costume, wing-accented helmet and all! I’m really digging the bold colors and the rugged material of the suit.  In fact, according to EW, Cap’s uniform “was designed to resemble a tricked-out airman’s jumpsuit.”  I like it.  Here’s a fun fact for you: According to costume designer Anna Sheppard, it takes Evans about 25 minutes to gear up.  She spills, “He likes to do it all by himself. I think it helps him feel like a super hero.”  Captain America: The First Avenger opens July 22, 2011.

Update: Another image has surfaced!  Hop after the break and take a gander.

FIRST LOOK: Andrew Garfield is Spider-Man

Here’s your first look at Andrew Garfield as young Peter Parker donning his super sleek Spider-Man suit.  In an interview with The Guardian, the Social Network star shared what it felt like to experience the suit. “I feel like a kid in my [pajamas],” he said. “I can only say how it feels and it feels pretty special. It feels like a dream [realized] and a fantasy [realized] and I don’t take it lightly and feel very, very lucky that I get to wear spandex for the next few months!”

Guess we’ll have to wait a bit longer to see the mask; perhaps it will be unveiled in the first theatrical trailer.  The Spider-Man reboot hits theatres in 3D July 3, 2012.
