Oh, what a lovely mashup: ‘Adventure Time’ meets ‘Mad Max’

If you’re a fan of Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time and the post-apocalyptic flick Mad Max: Fury Road, you best watch this viral mashup. Animator Egor Zhgun, inspired by Ryan May’s artwork, wonderfully combines the characters and animation style of Adventure Time with the chaotic nature from Fury Road. The result is “Madventure Time” starring Finn the Human as Max, Jake the Dog as his getaway vehicle, The Ice King as Immortan Joe, and Marceline the Vampire Queen appropriately rocks out as The Doof Warrior. Other beings from the Land of Ooo, including Princesses and such, make cameos and it all just works so well. Enjoy!

Marvel ditches fourth wall: ‘Deadpool’ is coming [Update: Red-band trailer is here]

Update (8/4): Here’s the Deadpool red-band trailer, right on schedule. Without giving anything away, I’m just going to say that this is the Deadpool fans have been clamoring for (read: incredibly funny & incredibly violent) and Ryan Reynolds delivers. Interested in watching the more “family-friendly” version of the trailer? Click here; don’t miss Deadpool’s tag at the end of it! Yesterday’s trailer teaser has been pushed below the fold.

Previous: The Merc with the Mouth is ready to play. In typical Deadpool fashion, 20th Century Fox has released a teaser teasing a theatrical trailer due to drop tomorrow. In it, star Ryan Reynolds sits menacingly in the shadows, putting on his best Don LaFontaine impersonation and poking fun at the studio that “sewed [his character’s] f**king mouth shut the first time.” Reynolds, of course, is referring to 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the movie in which Deadpool received screen time with Hugh Jackman’s alter ego but wasn’t afforded the opportunity to fully realize the character. In the upcoming Deadpool, due out in 2016, a deserved redo is in order.

For the uninitiated, Deadpool is yet another character from Marvel’s playpen of superheroes, but he’s starkly different from the rest in that he’s a breaker of the fourth wall. Across comic books, video games, and movies, Deadpool is aware of the medium he’s placed in. At the end of this teaser, Reynolds-as-Deadpool says, “Get ready to blow out your collective sphincters cuz my trailer is coming…tomorrow.” This isn’t simply a tongue-in-cheek trick; this is specifically how Deadpool operates and it’s sure to make the movie weird in all the right ways. Oh, and that’s also why he’s oft-referred to as “The Merc with the Mouth”–he’s got a dirty mouth and he’s not afraid to use it. Deadpool is rated-R, allowing the unfiltered, comic book version of the character to really come alive.

When the red-band trailer releases tomorrow, I’ll be sure to amend this post accordingly. Reynolds is sharing it on Conan Tuesday night, and a lighter green-band version will play in front of Fantastic Four in theatres at the end of the week.

Deadpool also stars Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T.J. Miller, Gina Carano, and Brianna Hildebrand, and it’s directed by visual effects artist Tim Miller. Due out February 12, 2016. Continue reading Marvel ditches fourth wall: ‘Deadpool’ is coming [Update: Red-band trailer is here]

Derek Zoolander is back on the scene, has difficulty with sequel’s title in new teaser

I went to see the new Mission: Impossible this weekend (it was good, not great), and prior to the movie, a trailer pondering the origins of the universe and the human species started to play. I gripped my seat tight in anticipation of what was unfolding. A robotic narrator (I was thinking Stephen Hawking at the time) talks up the big bang and how it led to life on Earth. Suddenly the clip torpedoes you into a human brain, and that’s when things take a turn for the comedic and I started to wonder what’s going on here? 3+4=34…E=mc(hammer)…the definition of the word “Eugoogly”…a don’t-turn-left sign…neon blowdryers and an orange mocha frappuccino…cameras and mermans…it’s all starting to make sense now. Hawking poses: “The one question that has puzzled mankind since the beginning of time?”

“If God exists, then why did he make ugly people?” submits Ben Stiller as dim-witted male model Derek Zoolander. That’s right–all along this was the first teaser trailer for the hotly anticipated Zoolander sequel. Is it 2oolander, or Zoolander II? The teaser has fun with all that towards the end.

I’m not so sure that the teaser lives up to the hysterical unveiling of the sequel during Paris Fashion Week when Stiller and co-star Owen Wilson crashed the runway in character. Though I will say, going into this at the theatre thinking it was a first-look at a new sci-fi flick and then seeing it spin into Zoolander was quite the treat.

Stiller directs a script penned by Justin Theroux (Tropic Thunder). Will Ferrell and Christine Taylor reprise their roles from the 2001 original, and joining them are Penelope Cruz and Kristen Wiig. Lots of fun cameos are expected.

2oolander (yeah, I’m sticking with that) hits theatres February 12, 2016. Continue reading Derek Zoolander is back on the scene, has difficulty with sequel’s title in new teaser

Steve Jobs documentary examines the multifaceted trendsetter

“Bold. Brilliant. Brutal.” That’s the tagline for Alex Gibney’s documentary focusing on Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. Gibney, who directed the critically-acclaimed HBO scientology doc Going Clear, picks away at Jobs’ sheen he accumulated over the years as he helped build Apple into a major technological innovating machine. By the end of the trailer you get a sense that Gibney aims to shine a light on the good, the bad, and the ugly surrounding Jobs’ rise to iconic status and yes, emotions run high. Apple exec Eddy Cue publicly denounced the film calling it “an inaccurate and mean-spirited view of my friend.”

Apple fanboys and fangirls will get their opportunity to conjure an opinion about Gibney’s doc when Steve Jobs: The Man In The Machine hits theatres and digital platforms (including iTunes and On Demand) September 4.

“This is a story that’s amazing,” Jobs exclaims in the trailer. “Its got theft, stolen property, extortion, there’s sex in there. Somebody should make a movie out of this!” It’s already been done…and then there’s this doc…and coming this fall is another movie based on his life. Steve, whether or not you stand by them up there in the clouds, movies are being made about you and your wish is coming true.

Christoph Waltz steps out of the shadows in latest ‘SPECTRE’ sneak

The first full-length trailer for Bond 24 aka SPECTRE has arrived. Sam Mendes directs Daniel Craig as the actor suits up to portray the British Secret Service agent 007 for the fourth time. All of the major players get some screen in this extended look at the action-packed movie, even Bond’s new getaway vehicle, the Astin Martin DB10. Christoph Waltz’ Hannes Oberhauser remains shrouded in mystery, but at least we get a better look at him here than before. “You came across me so many times and yet you never saw me. What took you so long?” And then: “It was me, James. The author of all your pain.” Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) has perfected playing sinister. The official film synopsis follows:

A cryptic message from the past sends James Bond on a rogue mission to Mexico City and eventually Rome, where he meets Lucia Sciarra (Monica Bellucci), the beautiful and forbidden widow of an infamous criminal. Bond infiltrates a secret meeting and uncovers the existence of the sinister organisation known as SPECTRE.

Meanwhile back in London, Max Denbigh (Andrew Scott), the new head of the Centre for National Security, questions Bond’s actions and challenges the relevance of MI6, led by M (Ralph Fiennes). Bond covertly enlists Moneypenny (Naomie Harris) and Q (Ben Whishaw) to help him seek out Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux), the daughter of his old nemesis Mr White (Jesper Christensen), who may hold the clue to untangling the web of SPECTRE. As the daughter of an assassin, she understands Bond in a way most others cannot.

As Bond ventures towards the heart of SPECTRE, he learns of a chilling connection between himself and the enemy he seeks, played by Christoph Waltz.

SPECTRE hits theatres November 6.

Pixar forgoes dialogue to set the mood in its next adventure ‘The Good Dinosaur’

Disney and Pixar pick up right where they left off in this first official trailer for the upcoming animated pic The Good Dinosaur. The June teaser ended with a heartwarming glimpse at a green dinosaur and his pet human (more on that in a second), and the new trailer comes to life with an elevated sense of discovery, trepidation, and adventure.

The Good Dinosaur asks this question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? The film follows an Apatosaurus named Arlo and Spot the cave-boy. Director Peter Sohn, a Pixar Story Artist who previously worked on films such as Finding Nemo and Up!, describes Dino as a boy-and-his-dog story, except here the roles are reversed. “Arlo himself is what we would have become, able to articulate and have certain emotions and connection to family,” says Sohn. [The dinosaurs have] become us, essentially… I’m trying to treat Spot in a very kind of animalistic way, where he doesn’t speak very much. He’s very feral.”

You’ll notice the trailer barely includes any dialogue, besides a few grunts and growls. Featured prominently is the song “Crystals” by Of Monsters and Men, a sweet tune that succinctly sets the mood for Pixar’s latest adventure. I say, who needs dialogue in a trailer that so magically brings to life an alternate reality ruled by dinosaurs; the animation here is incredibly life-like at times and pushes CGI to new limits. What say you?

The Good Dinosaur hits theatres November 25.

Comic Con: ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ brings together entire main cast & the fans get a concert (Behind-the-scenes video inside)

IMG_2405

It’s a funny thing, really. Though little was divulged in terms of new announcements at the Star Wars panel at San Diego Comic Con 2015, it turned out to be the most amazing Con experience and one I will never forget.

A packed Hall H chants “Let’s go Star Wars!” and claps as if we were at a sporting event. Only at Comic Con, am I right? In time, moderator Chris Hardwick (the Talking Dead host and Nerdist leader was everywhere this year!) came out to introduce producer Kathleen Kennedy of Lucasfilm, director J.J. Abrams, and screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan. Abrams talked up Episode VII‘s reliance on practical effects over CGI, and he made a point by bringing out a new character named Bobba Joe. The creature, operated magically by five people, managed to walk across the stage twice without falling over or bumping into anything. The oversized puppet really impressed the audience with its finesse. Abrams says to expect many characters like this in the film.

“We aren’t ready to show you scenes from the movie or a new trailer, but we wanted to bring something that was as unique and unexpected as we could,” Abrams told the crowd. The behind-the-scenes reel shown to panel attendees brought tears to many eyes–it encapsulates the sheer force of the Star Wars franchise and does a great job of sharing the level of detail and blood, sweat, and tears that Abrams and co. are putting into this thing. Also, Simon Pegg pops up in a surprise cameo! You can watch nearly 4-minute clip after the break.

The cast came out next. Our three heroes John Boyega (Finn), Daisy Ridley (Rey), and Oscar Isaacs (Poe Dameron) and then the villains Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), and Gwendolyn Christie (Captain Phasma) and then the legacy players Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), and Harrison Ford (Han Solo). And yes, the crowd went more than wild at the sight of all this talent, especially when Mr. Ford entered the scene. He received the biggest standing ovation by a mile. Gleeson accidentally leaked the name of the villains’ base: Starkiller Base. Beyond that, nothing new was announced here. A handful of first-looks at practical effects characters were displayed, and you can see those in the gallery.

Just as the panel felt like it was wrapping up, Abrams said this: “Who wants to go see a live Star Wars concert right now? We only have room for all of you. We are literally all going to walk to a location together and experience a Star Wars concert tonight.” It’s hard to describe the rush I felt along with everyone else there. It was like a wave of excitement crashed into the crowd and all of sudden we were all high on life all at once. And with that, the entire Hall H–over 6,000 people–proceeded to collect their belongings and follow a procession of Stormtroopers to the Embarcadero Marina Park South where the San Diego Symphony was waiting to perform selections from the iconic Star Wars score. The walk took about 45 minutes or so, but that wasn’t a problem for anyone. With our exclusive lanyards we walked proudly behind the convention center and slowly made our way to the secret venue on the water. Once everyone was situated with free colored lightsabers, Abrams and the entire cast came out again to introduce the symphony. Composer John Williams wasn’t on hand, unfortunately, but he did pre-record a message wishing the fans a good time and “May the force be with you.” The sun set, the music played beautifully against a backdrop consisting of classic scenes spanning all six films, and just when we all thought it couldn’t get any better, fireworks exploded in the sky just as the Star Wars main theme kicked in at the end of the concert. A rainbow of lightsabers showered the symphony with love.

This was truly a shared experience to cherish for a lifetime.

Comic Con: Deadshot, Harley Quinn, and the Joker assemble in ‘Suicide Squad’

“I want to assemble a task force of the most dangerous people on the planet who I think can do some good. And if anything goes wrong we blame them; we have built in deniability. Getting people to act against their own self-interest is what I do for a living.” That’s Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder) channeling her inner Annalise Keating, and succinctly summing up the premise for DC’s upcoming super-villain flick Suicide Squad.

The all-star lineup includes Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, Adam Beach as Slipknot, and of course Jared Leto is the Joker. David Ayer (End of WatchFury) writes and directs.

It’s a relatively quiet trailer, until Leto’s Joker comes out to play. “Oh, I’m not gonna kill ya. I’m just gonna hurt ya really, really bad.” Wouldn’t want to be on the other side of that interrogation. For a first look teaser, it hits all the right notes; I’m all in.

Suicide Squad hits theatres August 5, 2016.

Comic Con: Batman takes on Superman–with a pinch of Lex Luthor & Wonder Woman–in latest peek at ‘Dawn of Justice’

During the climactic scene in Man of Steel, Superman (Henry Cavill) battles General Zod (Michael Shannon) and in the process decimates the city of Metropolis. Turns out Batman (Ben Affleck) was witness to the destruction, too. “He has the power to wipe out the entire human race,” growls Bruce Wayne. There we have it:  the “v” in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is clearer than ever now. Batman wants to take out Superman before he destroys us all. We, of course, know that Clark Kent’s intentions are good, but the mess he made in Man of Steel and the death toll to come out of all that tell a different story. What else does this positively jam-packed trailer tease? Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) is up to no good and still has hair, and Gal Gadot looks fantastic as Wonder Woman. No sign of Aquaman (Jason Momoa) just yet.

If you were ever on the fence here, this latest peek at Dawn of Justice should reel you right in. A stellar trailer, indeed. Zack Snyder’s upcoming DC adventure is out March 26, 2016.

First look: Paul Feig’s ‘Ghostbusters’ gals are ready to kick some ass

What’s better than hearing about Melissa McCarthy, Kristin Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones joining the cast of the new Ghostbusters? Seeing Melissa McCarthy, Kristin Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones in action, that’s what! Nearly six months after it was announced that the SNL players plus McCarthy would star in Paul Feig’s upcoming relaunch of the Ghostbusters franchise, the director tweeted out this image (see above) featuring the ladies all geared up and ready to pulverize some nasty poltergeists. Feig has been ramping up anticipation for his next flick on social media; in addition to the costumed cast, he has also shared images of the costumes on a rack, some slimy green goo, and first-looks at the Ghostbusters’ iconic ride, Ecto-1, and the “modern” proton pack.

So far, so good. Itching for a trailer? Me too.

Ghostbusters returns to theatres July 22, 2016.

It’s official: Han Solo spins off in his own ‘Star Wars’ pic coming in 2018

The Star Wars universe is growing. Today, Disney made official a second Star WarsAnthology Series” film that will focus on the early days of smuggler-turned-hero Han Solo. “The story focuses on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley,” reads the press release. I guess that puts the kibosh on Harrison Ford reprising his iconic character in this untitled prequel spinoff.

Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, the witty and wickedly funny directors behind The LEGO MovieCloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and 21 Jump Street, and TV’s The Last Man on Earth are locked in to direct the Han Solo feature. Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jon are penning the script together; the elder Kasdan is a Star Wars veteran having co-written the screenplays for The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and the upcoming The Force Awakens. And of course, Lucasfilm mainstay Kathleen Kennedy is producing.

“This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with,” said Miller and Lord in a statement. “We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”

“We’re so excited to be working with Chris and Phil, who will bring a fresh new dimension to the Star Wars universe,” added the Kasdans. “They’re two of the smartest, funniest and most original filmmakers around, and the ideal choice to tell the story of Han Solo, one of the coolest characters in the galaxy.”

Kennedy also shared enthusiasm for working with the now-prolific directors. “It’s not just any filmmaker who can tell the story of such a beloved icon like Han Solo, and I’m excited to say we’ve found the perfect team to handle the task. Larry and Jon know all there is to know about the character, and Chris and Phil will bring their wit, style, energy and heart to tell Han’s story.”

The Han Solo adventure sets its sights on a May 25, 2018 release. But first there’s J.J. Abrams’ The Force Awakens out this December 18, Gareth Edwards’ Anthology entry Rogue One out December 16, 2016, and Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII out May 26, 2017.

Apple aficionados, brace yourselves, because this extended look at the upcoming Steve Jobs film from screenwriter Aaron Sorkin and director Danny Boyle is completely engaging and pedal-to-the-metal from start to finish. It builds on the previously released teaser trailer and gives an even broader glimpse into the pursuit for perfection that Steve embodied during his tenure as the head and face of Apple. Michael Fassbender fully embraces the late CEO’s eccentricities and ultimate passion for advancing society with technological sensations. His supporting cast including Seth Rogen as Steve Wozniack, Jeff Daniels as John Sculley, and Kate Winslet as Joanna Hoffman are also in it to win it; with such a stellar cast and high-ranking auspices behind the script and lens, I’ll say it again: this isn’t your Ashton Kutcher’s Steve Jobs. Opens October 9.
