SNL sketch round-up: November 23, 2013

Josh Hutcherson of The Hunger Games hosted Saturday Night Live with musical guest Haim last night. A rundown of my favorite sketches follows after the break.

This week’s SNL MVP is Aidy Bryant. She always brings the house down in the Girlfriends Talk Show bit; her lines “What kind of hell I am in right now” and “I love you…oh my god what have I done” had me in stitches; her delivery is spot-on.

She also showed spunk during the Weekend Update segment where she played “The Worst Lady on an Airplane.” Her laughably maniacal character was over-the-top in the best way possible. “You can bang on the door all you want pal, there are no vacancies at the Hotel Ocupado!”

My favorite sketch of the night–drumroll, please–has to be “Office Boss” where newbie Beck Bennett proved his worth as a man with a baby’s body. The humor here was purely physical and Bennett had it down pat. A rather simple idea spawned into a laugh-out-loud gag that when on just long enough thanks to perfect execution on Bennett’s behalf. Hutcherson and Taran Killem played along well nicely, too.

Speaking of the night’s host, unfortunately Hutcherson wasn’t given that much to work with. His most memorable sketch is the one where he belts out Outfield’s “Your Love” songs-in-real-life style with Vanessa Bayer and the members of Haim. It’s wacky but it worked.

I think we can make it official now: Kyle Mooney and Beck Bennett’s comic duo Good Neighbor have taken the Digital Short reigns from Andy Samberg’s Lonely Island. Tonight’s short “Dancing,” like the Mooney/Bennett shorts before it, is bizarre as hell but it also carries an odd sense of humor that has me begging for more from these guys. Lonely Island they are not, but their unique sense of humor fills a void that’s been missing on the show ever since Samberg left.

Yep, I’m including Haim’s first performance here, too. The indie rock sisters from California belted out fine performances with ease and poise. And they appeared to really enjoy themselves during their brief cameo in the Josie sketch (see above).

When SNL returns December 7 Paul Rudd hosts with musical guest One Direction.
