This week Bruce Willis hosted Saturday Night Live with musical guest Katy Perry. A rundown of my favorite sketches follows after the break.
If you work in the entertainment industry or even just live in LA you will appreciate this faux promo for a new kind of 24 Hour Energy Drink. Kate McKinnon & Cecily Strong clock in funny performances.
“Boy Dance Party” is no SNL Digital Short but it manages to make some funny with Taran Killam rapping and Bruce Willis flailing around and singing along.
Overall this was a much weaker SNL when compared to last week’s Miley Cyrus romp, but one sketch does stand out from the rest. Vanessa Bayer trades in her Miley wardrobe to take on Lady Gaga. Though her impersonation isn’t anything to call home about, the half-naked dancers were spot-on with wacky choreography and carrying everyone to the set (I found myself laughing out loud when they made those crazy hand gestures before walking off the stage in the beginning). Willis’ over-the-top Michael Kors was entertaining, as was McKinnon’s Penelope Cruz and Killam’s keyboardist.
Cecily Strong is getting more comfortable in her seat at the Weekend Update desk. Her back-and-forth with Seth on the Kardashian/Jenner divorce was hysterical.
Bobby Moynihan reprised his role as the kitty-obsessed astronaut in the “Armageddon” sketch. It was funny enough, but unfortunately he was unable to recreate the magic of the character’s premiere in “Mars Mission.”
What I liked about the pre-recorded “Beer Pong” sketch and the “Miley Sex Tape” before it is that Lorne is giving the new guys room to explore their comedic abilities. Here Kyle Mooney and Beck Bennett show off their off-kilter personas and I actually thought it was kind of funny. No belly laughs but I enjoyed their effort.
After a one week break SNL returns October 26 with host Edward Norton and musical guest Janelle Monae.
