Here we are again: April Fools Day. Only this time around it’s 2013 and no one is safe. We start, as is tradition, with Google’s masterful pranks. It’s all after the break…or is it.
This year Google is highlighting four worthy pranks that you must check out.
Google Nose Beta: Search, share, and experience aromas wherever you are.
Gmail Blue: It’s Gmail, but blue. (This had me cackling in laughter, if you have to know.)
Google Maps in Treasure Mode: Google has found Captain Kidd’s treasure map and wants your help to find the hidden gold. X marks the spot in Google Maps, now accessible in Treasure Mode.
YouTube is closing: Apparently YouTube is just one giant content hoping to seek out the best video uploaded. At midnight the site will shut down and over the course of the next decade Google will sift through years of submissions and announce the winner for “Best Video” in 2023; at that time the site will relaunch and make itself open to submissions again. Introducing Swiftkey Tilt–a revolutionary new way to input text using your mobile device.
THINKGEEK
The online shop is back with oodles of fake products that’ll make you wish they were real. Pictured above is the Play-Doh 3D Printer, described as “the most economical and fun entry-level 3D printer on the market. Other faux-items you can’t buy include the Batman Family Car Decal Set, the Adventure Time BMO Interactive Buddy, and one Eye of Sauron Desk Lamp. Check ’em all out at ThinkGeek, while supplies last.
HULU
The video streaming site is pimping new “April Premieres” of shows within shows from popular comedies like “Inspector Spacetime” (Community), “Ya Heard with Peard” (Parks And Rec), and “Queen of Jordan” (30 Rock). Check out the lineup at Hulu today.
FUNNY OR DIE
The site that’s home to some of the most viraly videos has invented “Kickstart or Die” for the pranky holiday. In a note on its main page, FOD tells its viewers that with their help, some of your favorite TV shows lost in the ’90s can make a major comeback. One, for example, is Darkwing Duck: The Movie! Watch the idea for that in the clip embedded above; and just so you know, the Kickstarter pledge goal is a manageable $1,200,450. For more spoofs (like “The Family Matters Movie“) head over to Funny or Die.
FAKE MOVIE TRAILER
Here’s a trailer posted by Sony Pictures for Pineapple Express 2 starring Seth Rogen, James Franco, and Danny McBride. Except that’s not real. Well, in actuality it is promoting a real movie: This Is The End starring the same comedians coming out June 14. Good marketing ploy, eh?
FAKE TV PROMOS
Every April Fools ABC likes to have fun with fake promos. This year, Castle star Nathan Fillion takes over some of the alphabet network’s most popular shows like Once Upon A Time and Scandal. Check ’em all out in the gallery below.abc
