Was Kosinski’s Oblivion not enough to satisfy your thirst for science fiction thriller flicks? Well here’s another one. Following his dysmal attempts at making a decent movie (read: The Village, Lady in the Water, The Happening, The Last Airbender), director M. Night Shyamalan is looking to turn things around with After Earth, a sci-fier in a similar vein to Oblivion that sees Pursuit of Happyness father-and-son team Will and Jaden Smith crash-land on a dangerous Earth.
The synopsis divulges that “the movie takes place on Earth, 1,000 years after humans fled it because of cataclysmic events. With Cypher [Will Smith] critically injured, Kitai [Jaden Smith] must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash. Father and son must learn to work together and trust one another if they want any chance of returning home.”
After Earth releases June 7, 2013.
Now here’s something you’ve been waiting for–our first real look at Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim. In this first trailer we learn where exactly the monsters (or Kaiju) come from and we see how the humans control the robots (or Jaegers). Also, video gamers might recognize the AI voice for the robots used here: yes, it is in fact voice actor Ellen McClain who brought GlaDOS to life in the puzzle game Portal.
All of the amazing visuals aside, one of the best parts of this trailer has to be Idris Elba’s delivery of one kick-ass speech: “Today, at the edge of our hope, at the end of our time, we have chosen to believe in each other. Today we face the monsters that are at our door. Today we are canceling the apocalypse.”
Experience giant fucking monsters battling giant fucking robots right here, right now. Pacific Rim opens July 12, 2013. See a new poster for it in the gallery above.
Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot is looking really, really good at this point. In July Warner Bros. released not one but two teaser trailers that set the tone for Man of Steel. Executive producer Christopher Nolan is borrowing from his gritty take on the Dark Knight and pushing Superman to new heights in this origin story. While the two teasers offered Clark Kent (Henry Cavill) guidance from his biological and adoptive fathers (Jor-El and Jonathan Kent played by Kevin Costner and Russell Crowe, respectively), this debut full-length trailer spills more light on Kent’s Earth-bound father. We witness a young Clark save a boy from a bus crashing into a body of water and Jonathan urges his son, “You’ve got to keep this side of yourself a secret.” To which Clark responds, “What was I supposed to do? Just let him die?” Jonathan: “Maybe.” This origin story will find Clark debating whether or not to use his powers bestowed upon him on the planet Krypton; at the end of the trailer we hear him ask, “My father believed that if the world found out who I really was, they’d reject me. He was convinced that the world wasn’t ready. What do you think?” Watch Superman soar (and also get glimpses of Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as Clark Kent’s adoptive parents, Amy Adams as Louis Lane and Michael Shannon as the villainous General Zod) in this new trailer.
Man of Steel opens June 14, 2013. A new poster featuring Superman in cuffs is in the gallery above.
Here’s another look at Gore Verbinski’s The Lone Ranger starring Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp. The Western adventure rides into theatres July 3, 2013.
And last, here’s the Japanese trailer for Iron Man 3. It contains footage not shown in the previously released American version. The first movie that makes up Marvel’s Phase Two comes out May 3, 2013.
