Netflix and Amazon original series rule in November: Marvel’s ‘Jessica Jones’ & more inside

The month of November is dominated by highly anticipated new original series from Netflix, and one from Amazon (and no, it’s not Transparent). Skip after the break for the full rundown on what to watch this month, streaming service edition.

On Friday, Nov. 6, Aziz Ansari (Parks and Recreation) returns to your TV in a 10-episode single-camera comedy called Master of None. Ansari is pulling a Louis C.K. here, serving as star, writer, and director of his new show. Master of None is loosely based on Ansari’s personal life experiences. Fun fact: His parents in the show are actually played by his real-life parents! Ansari plays Dev, “a 30-year-old actor in New York who has trouble deciding what he wants to eat, much less the pathway for the rest of his life.” Co-starring is Noël Wells (SNL), Eric Wareheim, Lena Waithe, Kelvin Yu, and H. Jon Benjamin. Parks and Rec vets Alan Yang and Michael Schur executive produce alongside Ansari.

Bob Odenkirk (Breaking BadBetter Call Saul) and David Cross (Arrested Development) are reuniting for a new sketch comedy show in W/ Bob & David. Previously, the two comedians/actors had teamed up for HBO’s sketch comedy series Mr. Show with Bob & David and that lasted four seasons. The two have publicly shared that their new show is not a direct continuation of the original since it’s different in structure and delivery. All four half-hour installments will debut on Netflix on Friday, Nov. 13. Paul F. Tompkins, Brian Posehn, and more friends from Mr. Show will make appearances.

Netflix is ready to strike gold again with their latest Marvel collaboration, Jessica Jones, set to take flight on Friday, Nov. 20. Krysten Ritter plays the title character, and Doctor Who‘s David Tennant will appear as villain Kilgrave. Jessica Jones is the second of four Marvel series to debut on the streaming service. The first was the critically acclaimed Daredevil, and it will be followed by Luke Cage and Iron Fist. And then, all four series will culminate in an Avengers-esque special called The Defenders. It’s already been confirmed that Luke Cage, played by Mike Colter, will make his debut in Jessica Jones‘ first season. Jones is a private eye in Hell’s Kitchen with a superhero past. Watch the tantalizing trailer to get the adrenaline pumping. Looks like Netflix has another hit on its hands.

What if the Axis powers won World War II and the Nazis ruled the land? That’s the alternate history that Amazon‘s latest original series, Man in the High Castle, posits. It’s based on Philip K. Dick’s 1962 novel of the same name, and it’s quite an intriguing plot, is it not? Positive word of mouth is making this one out to be the best original content from Amazon since Jill Soloway’s stellar Transparent. Ridley Scott (AlienBlade Runner) serves as executive producer with Frank Spotnitz (The X-Files). Man in the High Castle premieres Friday, Nov. 20.
